Tonight I was on a photo shoot (engagement pictures) and I'm about 15 minutes into it, and decide to change lenses, and the camera just up and died! It turns on, but the LCD won't turn on. I can take a picture, but it, obviously, won't display. None of the buttons on the top of the camera work. None of the buttons down the left side work. No error codes (no infamous Error 99). I can rotate the program selector on the left, but I can't change white balance, ISO speed, any of that stuff on the right.
I tried taking the flash off, the lens off, the memory card out, the battery out (even removed the battery grip), put it all back together and it still doesn't work. I even replaced the battery grip with the single battery compartment. Still no joy.
So I tried taking pictures. It still seemed as if it was working. I even verified that it was saving the pictures by plopping the card into my Epson P-2000.
So I debated... do I keep taking pictues? It would almost be like shooting film! No review capability. And I would be stuck with the ISO that I started with. Sure sounds like film. Anyway, the couple was kind enough to agree to finish up the shoot next week. I'm just glad it wasn't a wedding. (though I usually have my Digital Rebel with me as a backup)
I had planned to upgrade later this year, but the fact that I have a wedding tomorrow morning just bumped the timing up a bit! I wondered, do I rent another 20D tomorrow, or do I go ahead with the 5D purchase now? I hate paying twice for something, so I decided to buy it now.
The extended warranty on the 20D ought to cover fixing it. So I'll still keep it as my backup camera.
But now the Digital Rebel (300D) is up for sale. I haven't even thought about money yet, so I'll have to research things a bit before posting an asking price, but let me know if anyone is interested.
