Hold you thumb up infront of you so that i covers something in the backgroung then close you right eye and then your left eye. Notice that the finger "jumps" to the side in one case? The eye where it doesn't happen is your "aiming" eye.
Not really that important for photography but rather amusing IMO.
For me it's my left eye which I also use to compose images. Right handed. |

that doesn't work.. if you look at your finger with your left eye while placing it to cover something then it jumps while looking with your right eye and vice versa...
there really isn't a real test available to see wich eye is the dominant one..
the best way is to close one eye and look through the viewfinder and then try it with the other eye, and see wich eye is easier to close while still focusing with the open eye and wich feels more comfortable :) |

I'm right handed, but I use my left eye to look through the viewfinder. I've always done it that way.
Some of the older Nikon cameras used the film rewind lever to switch on the meter, and it was impossible for me to use one without poking myself in the right eye or having my forehead switch off the camera. ARGH! Luckily, they changed that, but I was never able to be comfortable with my boss' older Nikons.
BTW, I use my right eye when shooting firearms, but it's not hard for me to switch and still have a reasonable expectation of hitting the target.

| I should have mention you should have both eyes open when first placing the thumg in a position. You can't really get it to fully cover something while holding focus but you can get it close enough. If you then close one eye first and then the other you will see that it does jump away in one case and doesn't in the other case. Guaranteed |

right handed, I'm not DSLR (yet) so I use both eyes looking at the LCD, if I was to use the view finder it would be the right eye, just feels better.
On a side note I can only really use the phone holding it to my right ear, the left doesn't feel right (duh cause it's left) and just doesn't sound as clear...(oh and I dress left but that is the norm I think ;) )

| I take a lot of sports shots and use my right eye. I keep my left eye open watching the action develop so that I can anticipate where to swing the camera. It has become such a habit that when I'm taking any kind of picture I find myself looking both through the viewfinder with my right eye and with my left eye in "real time". |

Throw right handed (Fastest pitch recored 89 mph, weak!)
Boxing (when I use to box) Right but could go lefty.
Catch left handed
Kick left footed (longest field goal 42 yards)
I'm all mixed up! |
Looks like you were given excessive amounts of ambidextrose when you were a baby. Can you eat or paint (or eat paint for that matter) with your feet? |

left eye for viewing, i'm left eye dominant.
right handed, though trying to be ambidexterous... doesnt work with my eyes though.
i was using my camera with my feet the other day... while it was on a tripod.
oh and when i was a waitress my left arm was the balancing arm, and i couldn't do it on my right arm... which was weird apparently?!!

I'm right handed, and right eyed. I will quite often leave my left eye open to help compose, or keep an eye on things that are moving.

amen brother, my situation exactly :)
Originally posted by Konador: I'm right handed and use my left eye. I think I use my left because I can't close one eye and not the other. When putting my left eye to the viewfinder I can keep my right eye open and the camera body blocks light getting to it, so I can see the viewfinder image clearly. If I try to compose using my right eye, I can still see a ghost image from my left eye since the camera body doesn't block it. |

| I've had lasik treatment on both eyes, which I tested for dominance before surgery. I had the dominant eye (right) lased for distant vision, and the non-dominant one lased for near vision. I am right handed, and use the right (dominant/distant vision) eye for the viewfinder. This is the way I've always done it and thank goodness I did the right eye for distance. The left eye is useless for seeing anything through the viewfinder! |

I have also had laser surgery on both eyes. Before the surgery, my left eye was slightly better and was reported to be dominant. Both eyes were lasered to be better than 20/20. Aside from some leftover glare, I tested recently for a driving test at 20/15 (1.2+) with both eyes.
After surgery, the left eye appears to still be slightly better and is still dominant (I doubt this would change either way).
I use the viewfinder with my left eye. |
