Just curious if anyone has any leads on cheap underwater P&S for SCUBA diving and snorkeling?

Cheap doesn't usually equal good quality pictures underwater, but understanding that I've had pretty decent results with a Canon S1 and the Canon underwater enclosure. Also the Olympus 8080 and Olympus enclosure, but I think the S1 performed better considering the price difference.

I use a Canon S50 bought off eBay for less than £100
The housing was around £60 again off ebay.

Underwater camera section at B&H Photo.

The Pentax is "only" rated good to 5' but has 6MP/Optical Zoom -- looks like a great traveling camera for all-conditions use ... and fun in the pool or for aquarium shots ... I'm almost talking myself into getting one : )

I seem to remember Ritz/Wolf stocking a disposable camera for underwater use, but I think it's film-based.

Snorkelling is one thing - its not too deep, but SCUBA - depends how deep you go. Light levels drop off quite a bit, colors change - you need a flash but most importantly the pressure goes up dramatically. I used to fix watches, have seen plenty of "water resistant / 50m" watches wrecked by surfing, snokelling, SCUBA etc (the standard labeling is confusing, that a whole other story).

Have a good read of the instructions on the waterproof case/camera - check out depth and time recommendations. Salt water kills stuff quickly and thoroughly!

The 350D has a special house (on bhphoto) for underwater use, maybe there is a simlar thing for the 20D?

Yeah, there is, but it's
a)expensive
b)do I really want to risk a 20D? what if I don't screw it tight enough or something.... *shudder*

i have an underwater housing for my olympus stylus 400. Took it out surfing before it was all good. the cam was like 320 i think and the housing about 140 if i remember correctly. It costed me more however because I had to have it shipped to New Zealand as that's where I was living at that point.

I don't know if you're gonna get much cheaper than that with digi underwater safe.

I have the Optio WP. I think they can be had for around $275 and maybe a bit less used. Its a great p/s but some of its weakness's are a propietary battery - no manual controls.

If this is for a vacation you might want to consider renting one. Might be cheaper in the long run.
