Well, yeah, you know, the nation's only three thousand miles across and a couple thousand miles from north to south. You can't go anywhere without tripping over the guy. Sheesh.
Come to California; you'd hardly know you were in the US at all as far as politics go. (coming from me, that is not actually a compliment). |

Let's take the next step and start the process of forming a committee. I think that we should have nominations for a seven member group. This would not necessarily be the group who would be taking the project all the way to the end, but rather focus the discussion and making key decisions. They could later dissolve and form a new committee that would be more oriented towards the actual execution of the project. My nominations are notesinstones and bear_music. Let's end the nomination process this coming Thursday at 12:00am. Then we will compile a list and have a final vote. If you are really excited about helping, you can nominate yourself. |

I have a suggestion that may be worthwhile...
Ask the site council to take a look at this thread. Let them propose some really solid organization to the ideas and ask for their help to get the organizational structure for this event off the ground...

I submitted a request to the SC:
Dear Site Council:
There are quite a few people in this thread who would like to see the creation of an international DPC convention / get together to be held in the summer or late summer of 2007. This idea is a great one but it needs some extreme assistance with the coordination. We would like for the site council to weigh in on, and help get the initial coordination done for this event. A committee needs to be formed from committed volunteers who would be willing to work this event through to the end. Since this would likely be the first of an ongoing annual event, we would like to have it done right. Your assistance in the initial coordination would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks :)
The DPC Collective

How about California? Lots of things to see and do there, fun for the family if you want to bring them. I have always wanted to go to California. :) |

I did a quick search and found a return flight from Guam to Iceland and back for $3606
and there is probably a cheaper way.. this flight was from Guam-Tokyo-London-Iceland and same way back..

i don't know about this...there's a huge difference between enforcing rules and making sure members of an online community are playing nice and fair, and coordinating a world-wide meeting.
if you want something like this to be successful, you've got to get it right. that's why there are actually professional meeting planners that do this for a living. i mean, on one hand, there are enough people here that could probably pull this off, but, like anything else, if they're working from excitement rather than experience, there will probably be some details that get overlooked.
i would suggest starting at the top. let D&L post up a survey, and have them email all registered and paid members a link to the survey with a request for input. it should be more than a simple poll, something to get an idea as to how far people are willing to travel, and how much they are willing to spend. they could also see who has experience in meeting planning...
sure, the grassroots, down-home thing can be nice enough, but when the numbers start to grow, people start to expect a little more.

I don't see the need, or even the desirability, of involving SC in this in an official capacity. Indeed, I can see definite arguments against having it done "officially" by DPC. Our game site (www.eliters.org) has GTGs all the time, and they are always unofficial. Site management does not want to be responsible for these activities, as they can't really control them and there are liability issues. We've had as many as 200 of us get together at one time, and we've always managed to pull it off on our own :-)
By the way, for the record, if we use Cape Cod it has to be after Labor Day, which is the official "end of season" on the Cape; in-season hotel/motel rooms are hard to come by and VERY pricy. Off season, some great bargains can be had.

while i'm not advocating the SC per se, i think that if this is going to be done under the purview of an "official" event, it needs to have "officially designated" organizers, and the D&L would have the final say as to what/when/how as well as input on the organizing committee. it's their ballgame.

Easter holidays are also doable; that's before the start of the season. Weather's better (or more relaible anyway) in September.

I kind of like the idea of multiple locations. People can pick and chose where they want to go based on what they want to shoot and who they want to shoot with, or what travel arrangements they can afford. We'll never come to an agreement on one super location for a DPCstock.

3 locations sounds great..
Iceland
Yosemite
Hong Kong
or something like that ;)
travel within Europe costs about the same to all locations, so for a person in Spain to go Iceland costs about the same as for a person to go from France to Portugal, or London to Denmark..
and for the USA just pick one of your prettiest places, travel within USA is about the same price to all locations.
and then it's Asia, it's very expencive to go from Asia to Europe or USA, so there should be a GTG there for Asia and Australia, somwhere nice like Taiwan, Thailand or Hong Kong.
