Saturday and sunday parking is free. I typically find space before 10AM over by the capitol building right off north capitol street.
As for hotels near there, I would check outlying areas. Greenbelt has 3 Marriotts and a Holiday Inn, runs between 75-100 a night and there is a metro with parking there. |

Is it a walkable distance from Union Station to GTG meeting point?
I'm planning to take a train now.

Is the Lincoln Bedroom available? Oh... I forgot Clinton isn't in office any longer :) |

Unfortunately, I will not be able to make the GTG in D.C. now. My 96 year old grandmother passed away yesterday and will be saying my final goodbye to her @ 2:00 on Saturday. Hoping I can join you all sometime in the near future, as I was excited about this being my first GTG.
Take some good shots and enjoy the cherry blossoms!

Right now the weather says rain in the morning, partly cloudy in the afternoon. I know we could do with some rain, but I hope they're wrong. Let it rain on Sunday. |

Yep. Union Station is kind of at 1st and A (to make it easier to understand) and the metro is at 9th and F. Massachusetts Avenue goes diagonal, cutting into your distance. And there is much to photograph on the way. We (You, Me, Muckpond, JPR) did the walk at the last DC get together from the Chinese Restaurant to the Botanical Gardens. About the same locations and distance.
If you get in early, I can get to Union Station. We could hit the Capitol Building, the Gardens, the Native American Museum, China Town, all pretty much on the way... kind of... :) |

Good to hear! I'll look forward to meeting you and everyone else. BTW... if I drive 250 miles and find out that the GTG is actually an April Fools Joke, I shall be pissed :)

I can meet up with you or you can take the subway to Gallery Place/China Town (takes 10 minutes max). Up to you... |

I'm arriving at Union Station around 12:30 and will be around until about 6pm (then have to head back to Philly for work - ugh). I'll give a buzz and catch up with y'all when I get there! Looking forward to seeing some familiar faces & meeting some new ones!
:-)

I would suggest (since I didn't see it) that someone clarify which entrance from GP/CT Metro would be the meeting point. See, there's 3 exits from that station, and they are several blocks apart. My guess is that Terry was talking about the entrance with the big neon fan over it, leading to the Chinatown Arch, but who knows for sure?

As noted in my original post, we should meet at the Chinatown exit of the station -- you are correct, that is the one with the fan.

Gallery Place/Chinatown is a transfer station for Red, Yellow and Green.
If you're on any of those lines, take the train straight to Gallery Place/Chinatown.
If you're coming in on Blue from Franconia/Springfield or Orange from Vienna, get off at Metro Center, pick up a Red train in the direction of Glenmont or Silver Spring, and go one stop to Gallery Place.
If you're coming in on blue from Largo or orange from New Carrolton, change trains at L'Enfant Plaza, pick up an yellow toward Mt Vernon Sq or a green toward Greenbelt, and go 2 stops to Gallery Place.
Exit the station via the escalator under the huge neon fan. We'll meet at the top.

It's a long walk, but walkable. You can also get on a Red Line metro at Union Station. You'll want a train headed in the direction of Shady Grove or Grosvenor stations. Go 2 stops in that direction and you'll be at Gallery Place/Chinatown.

IMPORTANT NOTE
When exiting the Metro station at Gallery Place/Chinatown, please use the exit under the huge neon fan! We'll be meeting at the top of that escalator at 2:00 PM.
Anyone who needs help or directions, please feel free to call my cell phone. My number is (717) 587-9591. Unfortunately I can't help with driving directions, but I am rather good at navigating the Metro.
A Metrorail system map is here.
I also *might* get into DC early so feel free to call me if you do as well.

I'm getting ready to head out right now. I'm just feeding my caffiene addiction. I might go to the zoo for a bit before the meet. |

The train plan didn't work out so I'll be driving in to Union Station - should get in around 12:30. Has anyone decided on some picture taking prior to 2?

It was very nice to meet everyone! I'll post pictures after I get a bit of a nap :)
I wanted to tell Charles how bad I felt that he kinda got lost in the crowd early on. It was a bummer that we didn't have any way to reach you...! |
