I didn't take this picture, nor will I edit it, because this is just her...naturally. This is also the picture that will be used in her obituary. This is my grandmother, my hero and best friend, who at 96 years old, passed away yesterday.
I write with tears on my keyboard, but happy tears because she is in a better place now. She was a 5th grade school teacher for 35 years, volunteer for the red cross, and up until 2 weeks ago could tell you stories about the war in the western part of Virginia...where she fed and clothed soldiers walking by. She made me chocolate chip cookies while standing with a walker, ridden with arthritis, because she wasn't
a quitter. The only time I ever heard her complain about anything was the day she got moved to a nursing home...2 days ago. She just wanted to go home.
Three years ago I had an aortic blood clot that was misdiagnosed for 3 days, broke off, travelled half way up my neck, made a U-turn and went down my arm. I ended up having all of the fingers amputated to less than 1 inch on my left hand due to lack of circulation. When I couldn't play my guitar anymore, she told me that God had just opened up a new door for me and my talents, finding me now with a camera in my hands.
The mother of 5, and great and grandmother to many, she told me I was her favorite. The day we moved her to the nursing home, she saw my face and said...'Cindy, you'd follow me to the end of the earth, wouldn't you?". I said, "Yes, Mamaw, I would". And she said "Don't you ever stop being who and what you are".
She was the "wind beneath my wings".
If nobody reads this thread, it's okay, it's just my way of getting out what I needed to say. She was loved by sooooo many. As I sit here looking out at this beautiful morning on the beach, she would hope that I would be taking pictures of it, which I will post following this.
If you have a grandmother, take the time to pick up the phone and tell her that you love her.

Sounds like a "grand" lady. You will sure miss her, but I'm sure she'll still be guiding you. Very touching tribute you've written. |
