There is a lot of talent on DPC as well as knowledge on everything from tripods to Photoshop. what i waw thinking is maybe we could start a thread on a single subject say skin retouching, and this thread could go on and on with everybodys knowledge, tips and tricks and it would be all in one place, then maybe the thread could be placed somewhere where its always available to new member or someone looking for a specific subject of photography,
and there could be many of them on single subjects
why do i think this is a great idea, well i think it would be easier to find the infomration in one thread then going from thread to thread searching tips and tricks.
what do you all think,

Essentially a very good idea.
However, it would create more work for the SC, because unless they keep the thread tidy and 100% on topic (by deleting all sorts of unwanted extra stuff that would most certainly turn up in them), it wouldn't be all that useful.
If the SC would be willing to do that, and the threads have their own section, it would be GREAT!!! |

our people could have common courtesy and not post in the thread if they dont have anything to add, unless its a question, because if one person has a question theres atleast 10 other people with the same question afraid to ask,
now look we have filled up three replies. lol, i will edit out shortly

We tried to do something similar to this with the "mentorship threads" a ways back, there was talk of a special forum section for them as a learning resource, but it never happened. They gradually dissolved and went away. Too bad, if you ask me. It seems like 90% of the vocal energy of the site is being diverted into inconsequential or contentious topics and the learning component has taken a back seat, at least for now.

Maybe they'd be more useful if they were open to everyone and not limited to the first 15 people who happened to be online at the time of announcement with strict instructions that no one else is allowed to post in them. Allowing anyone to use them at anytime would allow them to be used at the time of need which will likely vary for everyone and help them to continue on.
Why don't you give one a shot, Troy?

The Photoshop Basics mentorship thread was open to all. The problem is/was, there's no place to PARK them where they can be easily accessed when they get older.
I'll renew the plea to set up a new forum section for educational threads, so they can be located and browsed more easily.
I'd LOVE to get involved in mentoring again, I think it was a great thing. I'm all in favor of it.

I like the idea of both the subject specific and mentorship type stuff but in another forum that can be hidden from the front by each user as required (I think the last ones were in out&about or something).
I agree with Bear that we need something better and more photography related to talk and argue about :-) |

I'm guessing this is kind of like a chicken and egg situation. My suggestion would be to use available forum sections as suitable (Tips & Tricks for skin touch up maybe, etc.) and then if these threads are really used and there's an obvious need for an additional section, that can be addressed then.
Besides, you can't have it until I get my buy/sell forum so nyah. :P |

Why not just turn them into a tutorial? The creator (or a volunteer) could gather all the useful information out of the thread once it's mostly dead and organize it into a nice concise format. The tutorial could be ammended over time if need be.
I agree that the Tips and Tricks thread is a perfect spot for something like this. |

The subject that has most of my attention lately is how to recognize the keepers from the trashers. Especially since I got my D70 and started shooting RAW now that it's available to me all of the images are flat, uninteresting and uninspiring. But that doesn't discourage me as I have seen the greats on here post enough originals to know they nearly all start that way. I realize a lot of it is experience, but surely there are parts that can be quantized and understood. I'm not sure it would make a good topic for everyone, but that is what has my attention lately.

On the subject of these threads in general, I agree the best place for the information once gathered is in the help menu. Threads are great for dialog, for gathering the information -- but once it's gathered it really needs to be organized to be put to use.
These aren't really like the mentor groups so much, they were generally one or two people 'teaching' a select group what they know. The threads being proposed are more of a call for information than a call for students. Once the information has been gathered and organized, it would be a short step further to organize mentor groups around the data gathered.
A good idea that I hope takes off and perhaps brings back new and improved learning groups.
David

Be all that as it may, it's useful sometimes in such discussions to have someone "moderating" them, keeping them focused and on track. If anyone would like me to "start a thread" in a particular area, let me know. Spring has sprung, perhaps it's time for another "Landscape/Natural Light" thread? Or whatever...
I'm game.

some possible topic under that thread could be, what to meter off of during different lighting situations, either it be the sky, the subjects darker clothing,
maybe discuss how white and black throw off your light meter, and how to keep that from happening,
some ideas.
