No questions, complaints i'm surprised.
Do we need to state what the subject was or do we leave it to be figured out. Should the title say what the subject is. |

: Take a picture so close up to something that it cannot easily be identified at first glance.
If no one can identify it is it still a good photo? |

Take a look at the recent abstract challenge. The challenge said "If it is recognizable as an object - it is not an abstract" yet I could certainly identify many of the objects in the high-ranking images. I think it is enough to take pictures in which the form and shape is what is important, not the identity of the subject .
On the other hand, here are people here who did not regard a 639x640 image as meeting the requirements of the square crop challenge. If it is recognizable, it has to be good enough to attract enough positive votes to counter the negative votes from the DNMC police.
In any case, you might find it useful to look at the top-rated photos in the recent abstract challenge. The difference between that challenge and the current one is that the current challenge restricts us to close-up (macro) shots.
You do not need to state what the subject was in the title, but people certainly appreciate an explanation in the photographer's comments that appear after the voting.

So then the discussion begins between "macro" and "close up." I took a really interesting shot using my super macro mode yet it doesn't have that "river running" sense like the veins of a leaf or the hairs of a flower yet it is in the macro mode. I was very close, so I'm afraid people will say "this isn't a macro" even though they won't know what it is. I had that problem with the last macro challenge. I have a better camera now, but people said "this is a close up, not a macro" AUGHHHH What do YOU guys think?

To be a true macro, the object must be lifesize on the sensor, i.e. only objects that are as big as (or smaller) than a sensor can ever be a true macro.
Personally, however, as far as voting is concerned, I'll be perfectly happy to accept extreme close-ups, too...... as long as they depict something that looks bigger/closer than we normally view it. |

this was my entry into the macroII challenge where i put in the title"()" what it actually was and got one comment wishing i handt told what it was. so my suggestion is "dont ask...dont tell" ;o)

After some vacillation, I decided to not identify the object in the title... but it is identified in the comments that can be seen after the challenge is over.
This is only my second challenge entered ... and first time I was second-last, so improving seems likely. :)
Edit: Fixed an incorrect word choice... penalty of posting late at night.

I was going to re-shoot this but as my 20D is on it's way to the Canon factory for repairs (3rd time in 5 months), I am not able to...
So would love some thought/feedback on this shot if it were in the Abstract Macro....how do you think it might have done?

| So, what if the abstract creates a composition? Mine is very close up but because of its balance I think most people will think it wasn't a true macro, even if it is. Anyway, already up to over 350 entries. I can't wait to see what you all have done. This was a very fun challenge. I got to use my close up lens on every subject. Gave it a real workout. Most results came back a bit soft, but much better than my first few images I shot with it. DOF was much better this time around too. Well, hope I have as much fun voting on this heavy challenge as I did shooting for it. |

I'd love to think that in an "abstract" challenge the voters would embrace "abstract" titles... Probably wishful thinking on my part, pay me no heed...
