So (don't shoot me for gawd's sake) I was at a friend's place and he showed me his film Canon slr (no I've never used a film slr) that had the autofocus feature where you calibrate it to you eye, and then when you look at a certain focal point, that is where it does the auto focus. I know the Rebel has an 'auto' feature for it, but I don't like it and tend to set it to one spot and do the focus and move.

Basically (for those like me who did not know about this feature), you look at a certain point in the frame through the viewfinder, and it uses that point ot autofocus.

All I could say when he showed it to me is why the heck is this not a feature on the dslr's?

Comments, rumors, info I don't know about (i.e. it is available on some of them and I don't know?)

There was a few variations with the eye control. I think it was the EOS3, EOS 30 (I think was aka Elan 7-something) and others I think. I have never used it but the people I know used them swear by it while others had problems.

As far as I know they have not added this feature to any of the dSLR's.

So why is this feature not available on any of the dslr's? Just five minutes with it and I loved the feature!

I have the EOS 3 and did try to set up the eye control calibration once. It does require you to do the calibration several times to hone it in to your eye and I did not ever have the patience and didn't really think it was accurate enough for me at the point I got it to. Pesky. I was not impressed and never used it again but real gadget people who like to tinker with that kind of stuff might have had better luck with it.

I dunno - I know a frequent question was about how to disable the thing :), so I am guessing that it didn't work well for a lot of people and was one of the trendy things that seemed like a good idea at the time.

I believe a fair number of people had problems with it - couldn't get it to work, it would focus on the wrong point. Glasses wearers found it particularly hard IIRC.

Personally, I don't think I'd use it even if I had it... after all, isn't it good to have your eye wandering all around the frame looking for distracting elements, not just looking at the point of interest?
