Eliminate reflection and protect the lens. AND, most important, to look REALLY cool!

you can customize the outside so they look way cool!

They help when you're outside and going to be switching lenses.. you can set a lens down hood first and do what you have to, without worrying about getting dirt on the glass parts. Only works if the hood is shaped so that the lens balances on it of course..

Plus it's added protection, since I tend to hit/brush/tap the end (edge) of my lenses against things a lot the hood would break first instead of the front element.

ok the actual reason is to stop stray light from getting in and it reduces /eliminates flare and in my opinion should always be used.

in this thread, aguapreta said that in cases when he is shooting INTO the sun, the flares can be eliminated with a lens hood. How is that possible? I have always thought that to eliminate the flare, the sun has to be covered using the hood, isn't it? You mean with a lens hood, I can shoot with the sun in the composition?

If the sun is to your back the lens hood does almost nothing for you. When shooting towards the sun the hood can keep the sun from shining into the barrel and creating a flare. A long hood has some secondary effect, keeping stray light off the front element, and enriching color rendition. but if you are shooting straight into the sun the only thing that eliminates flare is a lens cap.

through the prevention of light entering the lens, which is then directed to a point which heats quickly. Less dispersion of light is the causality for global warming... lens hood: we're all safe

If you shoot in the rain as we (US) Pacific Northwesterners must do, the hood helps keep the glass dry preventing artifacts on the exposed image.

What's your 'top tips' for keeping your camera dry in these types of conditions?
