I went around to a couple local shops today to check out cameras. Mainly to see how each felt, layout of functions. But I was pleasantly surprised to find out when I asked that the one local shop is selling cameras and most of the lenses for the same price internet shops are. Seeing how local shops mark up the video cameras I figured the same was true for still cameras as well. I tried the D60 (just for reference for Canon's new one) and the D100. Something just felt quirky with the D60, I don't know, but I fell in love when I put the D100 in my hands. They were out of stock, but he said they are expecting some Monday. So I'll have it this week.

I'm glad I did go out and look. Some internet shops are great and all, but you can't beat dealing with an actual person, for sales and beyond. It's also nice being able to pay for it and start using it that day.

True true true.
I will try to buy my 10D fro, the local photo shop as well.
ANd remember that you can price match with american express gold and get up to 250$ back. So I am going to buy from a local shop, security + encouraging them + contact .. and get a lower price with the price match thing.

Living overseas and speaking just a bit of Italian makes shopping a little difficult. I prefer going to a store and getting the hands-on too but alas I'll have to wait a few months before I'll be back in the states.

I live in a small town, with no camera shops. I did, however, get to try a Nikon D100 at Christmas in my home town. Wow. I almost dished out the cash right there, but my wife kicked me. lol.

I wish I had access to large camera shops so I could try the different components. Ah well, at least I get to breath fresh air.

I just got my DiMage last month from a local privately owned shop. I paid slightly more than I would have from one of the online discount shops but I also get any kind of help I may need now by simply either calling the store or by going in. When I went in it was only to look and hopefully feel the cameras trying to find one that I could handle with carpel tunnel, then I was planning to come home and order it online. I feel in love with the DiMage when I felt how the hand grip fit my hand, and my husband looked at me and said "GET IT!" I listened to him for once and purchased it right there. The one thing about getting it there was when I tried to download to my pc the first time I had trouble and a phone call to the store resulted in me purchasing a card reader at half price and they also gave me coupons to purchase printer paper at 30% off. So the little perks of buying locally do seem to be paying off.

I saw the D100 at Ivan's Camera. Priced at $3,300 Canadian ... a bit too much. With today's exchange rate, you should be able to get it for $3000 - $3050 ($2000 USD). Might be worth paying a bit more to support the local shop though. Ivan's Camera is a very well run shop ... excellent customer service and the sales people are serious photographers.

It is Carsand Mosher and they are run much better than Ivan's Camera!!! They originate from Truro and have two stores in Halifax. Very competitive, more stock, and I find more helpful than Ivan's.

Carsand Mosher website

By the way, Jacko - I think your wife was well within her rights to kick you for thinking about buying the D100!! Take a peek at the B&H Photo site if you're looking for over-the-border stuff. I know my underwater camera gear is priced there at about 1/3 the Canadian retail - with exchange that's 1/2 the Canadian retail (and it's tax free!!).

I found that the local shops are okay for the digtial SLRs mainly because the internet places are still marking them up as well due to high demand.
