Those of us whose first language is English (or is that english) should be much more careful with our grammar. It must be so confusing to those learning english to know what we are saying when we use slang and misplace our apostrophes or confuse there & their, your & you're . . .

Of course, I do get quite lazy typing online and I think I will take more care in the future.

BTW - People just don't take me serious! That's seriously folks, SERIOUSLY!!! :)

AND, it's "I couldn't care less" not "I could care less". OK I had better go now before I join Alan in his newly formed club.

Ok, here's my say in the matter. I type about 30-35 words a minute. And that is using my right pinky to backspace every other word. I mess up so much that some times I give up. I had the worse english teacher in Jr. high that I hated even going to class. She was rude and just down right mean!! I have a hard time with my spelling but I try to get things right. If you see something I am doing wrong then confront me personally and I will gladly correct my grammar. :-)

Sonja, I think that sometimes I truly forget that not everybody had good teachers or, in my case, a mother from the old country who insisted, with consequences, we get it right. We weren't allowed to use our left hands and we weren't allowed to speak english, improperly.

I must admit that I'm a grammar freak as well. It drives me nuts when folks use double-negatives and incorrect conjunctions. However, I've about given up worrying about grammar and spelling on the internet. Too many people type faster than they think or vice-versa. Capitalization, spelling and punctuation are virtually nonexistent. I must admit, I've started to just overlook it. Does that mean that future generations will worry even less about it? Scary!

Karmat I am an English teacher too, welcome in the club of bad writing English teachers! Sometimes I really have to cringe looking back at what I write here!

I'm glad that we're all able to post and re-post to things which offend and irritate ourselves. But when we sit alone at home reading the monitor we're sort of alone in our private space. And that gives us some ownership to what we're reading. But actually we are all in the room together and should be able to forgive each other's percieved faults. Our common passion here after all is photography, not perfection.

I also have a peeve, like who invented the toilet seat that wont stay up???

You must be new to the Internet. Sorry, but you'll just have to get used to it or ignore it. I don't think they teach grammar in school anymore.

It's OK to make the mistake of wasting your time complaining about this once, it's only natural.

Usually you can tell when English isn't someone's first language. Hey no problem if you're trying, English is a crazy language. But I have to agree I cannot stand to read a post where I is i, you is u, are is r. Are you really saving that much time and energy by not typing the whole word? Sheesh.

Another thing that bothers me is for some reason, whenever someone sits at a computer they turn into a "wigger"? Not so much here, but other forums I go on. I do not care to read a post;

"Yo mang, sup yo. man d00d check this out yo. look at the mad skillz i gotz. word, bling-bling"

I guess sometimes people just need to be slapped :/

umm. i'm was in the english honors program at the university of michigan and im currently a writter. sorry, but i dont care much about grammar or correct punctuation. spelling, however, should at least be learned in one's native tongue. as someone said, the point is to communicate. who's to say what the right way to do that is. if you can't tell that someone meant you're not your, then maybe your the fool. lol. if it makes sense it makes sense. besides, english is one of the most convoluted languages in the world. yeah, i think we should all speak latin in the forums from now on. oh, and i don't speak english, i speak american, it is much more natural, diverse, and interesting, (to me)! I enjoy the differences.

(edit: after reader the previous post.) i was offended by it. im white, most of my old friends are black, spanish, or asian, and many are aspiring rap and vocal artists. we all dress alike and our speech has a definite difference to it that was spawned by our urban angst develpoed as children. you won't see me writing such trash in forums, but i will speak in slang and vernacular jargon when in the correct places to do so. does that make me a wigger? i really dont think so. maybe you mean people on the internet who have one black family living in their town and have been influenced by the media to think its cool to talk that way. to me, its fine to write that way if you can talk that way naturally. unfortunately, many of the wiggers whos writing bothers you are most likely not wiggers, but their natural black counterparts. I know the sort of people that bother you, and they probablly bother me more than you because they give people like me a bad reputation, but i don't assume that everyone is one of them untill i get to know more about them.

i welcome any comments i receive. i can always understand them and thats what counts. can't we all just get along?!

Just one more reason computer-makers must constantly remind customers that the convenient pop-out plastic tray is NOT a cup-holder.

ahem...correction on your grammar. ...there are some folks here that don't...... should be: ...there are some folks here who don't...
Just thought you would like to know.

One of the most common errors made in english is the possesive use of its. The only time an apostrophe is used is when it is a contraction:

Example:
It's a nice day. (correct)

Its best features were...(correct) Most people put an apostrophe on the possesive. None is needed.

Just my two cents worth.

And that's exactly who I was referring to. My apologies if you took what I said as something else. If that's the environment you grew up in, (and I am in no way judging it), then so be it. That's who you are. But I was making a reference to the suburban kids that see some pop icon on MTV (or wherever) and assume "that's gotta be the happenin' thing". Me personally I usually use the term "wigger" loosely, describing anyone that tries to play something they're not. I've found though, the people that try to be something else usually emphasize the language, behavior, dress, more than the people that are naturally like that.

This is a good reminder for all of us`ems setting up camp around this thread. We have been starved now for the longest time waiting for another good pornographic rant, but alas... However, this "Grammer Police" thread is the perfect opportunity for us to finally break out the hot dogs, popcorn, and beer so that we can kick back, relax, and enjoy "The Best of DPChallenge". But be careful gang... While we enjoy their "panties getting into a bunch"... remember where your cup holder is!

Agreed. No offense taken.

GeneralE: that cup-holder thing is hilarious. I've known people who actually thought that. I was quite embarassed FOR them since they, of course, were not.
