Anyone UK-based with a real interest in the power of photography should watch this - 9pm this evening, Channel 4.
It's the story of and behind one of the images that you rarely see from 9/11 - not that its been banned or anything, but by tacit approval of press etc its hardly ever published.

I remember seeing an advert for this and wanting to watch it. I forgot it was on tonight, thanks for the reminder!

Esquire magazine had an article on it in Sept 2003:
The Falling Man
It's puts in perspective, the daily life & deaths an AP photographer (Richard Drew) faces, and how detached one must be do do that job. Richard Drew also recounts the day Bobby Kennedy was shot, being there, blood spattering on his own jacket, and though asked not to take pictures, he never has not done his job as an AP photographer.
It is a good read.

The esquire article, whilst interesting, doesn't include the full frame photo, actually; the crop shown there is not the most effective; Drew wanted it landscape, and it is far more beautiful that way. An extraordinary image. |

I just watched this yesterday.
The photograph of "The Falling Man" tells you everything you need to know about the events that day without showing any violence.
It was an interesting documentary. Definitely emotional at times.

There are times, however, when "human being" must outweigh "photojournalist". Not in the case of the Falling Man, etc... but there are times you see photos or video where you know the photographer could have intervened and prevented the event from happening.
