Its actually been a couple weeks but I didn't want to post back in the comfort challenge because I had one in it from this shoot. I had a lot of fun with my friend shooting on the roof and in the studio. I was hoping to get a few critiques(please be harsh) and perhaps which is favorite one or two of the bunch. Also, any ideas of good stuff for props in the studio? I've been thinking about it but coming up sort of dry. Thanks ahead of time.
These are from the same day and I had a hard time deciding which to use for the comfort challenge. I used the first one, did I choose right?

I like the top 3, a lot! What really "makes" these images for me are the eyes - the focus and clarity on them combined with the shallow DOF that forces you right into the picture.
The bottom three... well... they are missing that "spark of life" in the eyes, and, well ... I'm just not a fan of the color (first and last on the bottom row). But those top pictures, those are totally awesome. |

Thanks David and Jan, I was having issues with getting the color to come out properly on the three studio shots. Whenever I went to save them I lost a lot of color and contrast and ended up having to oversaturate the image to attempt to get it back to normal. I was going for a very warm tone, maybe I did it a tad too much.

I think the second is the best - both compositionally and lighting-wise. In a few of your shots (4,5,6) the foreground is blurry, and it is distracting. The skin color in 5 and 7 is a bit yellowish, perhaps the white balance could be better adjusted. Also, in #2, I would crop the knee out: torn jeans don't fit the classical shalow dof portrait style in this shot.

Are you shooting in RAW? Would be a good idea, especially with controlled light conditions such as a studio set up (or home studio). Can set to a specific WB and shoot away and then batch the WB in RAW to get what you wanted.
Otherwise you want to do a custom WB or use WhiBal or grey cards. Will help the color issue.
