Parliment Hill and the Rideau Canal.
That's all I can think of. I'm sure some people in the area will be able to offer more information

The Experimental Farm's gardens might make some nice shots if snow covered (beautiful during the summer but you're a bit early for the bloom).
Also be sure to hit the War Memorial (right down the street from the parliament buildings). In fact, within 3 blocks you've also got the Chateau Laurier, the old train station, the Langevin building (right across the street from Parliament Hill), and the set of locks linking the Rideau Canal to the Ottawa River.
If the parliamentary library is open after its renovations, I'd definitely suggest getting in there. The architectural work is mind-blowing. Also check out the Notre-Dame Cathedral Basilica (its no competition for Montreal's Notre-Dame but its beautiful nonetheless).
If you really are in to older architecture, consider hitting some of the churches around the city like St. Patrick's Basilica (gothic revival)
Lastly, consider a trip across the Ottawa river to Hull/Gatineau for the Canadian Museum of Civilization. Some amazing architectural work by Douglas Cardinal.

Hi Di, let's see if I can point you in a few directions...
As Pidge mentioned, Parliament Hill and the Canal are almost right next to each other. In the same area is the Rideau Center (lots of shopping, 3 floors of stores), there's also the Chateau Laurier Hotel. All of these places are on Wellington St.. (Note: Rideau Street where the Rideau Center is located, changes names when it crosses Sussex Drive.)
If you travel down Sussex Drive (east from Wellington/Rideau), you'll pass the American Embassy on the left. (It looks like it has a nuclear smoke stack on top of it). A little further down, you'll come to the Notre Dame Cathedral (where KarenNfld shot her blue ribbon winning
Busy Architecture photo.
Directly across the street from that, you'll see a large glass-front building which is the Art Museum. A little further down is the Royal Canadian Mint (on the same side as the Museum).
Now, if you cross over the river (over the the Quebec side), there's a large building to the left called the Museum of Civilization.
---
If you stay in the Downtown area, you've got to visit 2 places. Sparks Street Mall (an old street that no cars are allowed on, only pedestrians.) You may find a few street musicians. (then again, they can be just about anywhere downtown)
The other place you must see is the Byward Market.
Ottawa's a pretty large city. There's usually lots of people around for candids, park land scattered throughout the city. It's a pretty place.
Hope it works out that you can get there.
Oh, two more places on Sussex Drive... The Governor General's House and the Prime-minister's house. Both are just before Rockliff Parkway. To get there, head east towards the Art Museum as I mentioned above.
Feel free to PM me. :)

Somebody already mentioned the Museum of Civilization ... I second that one. The curves of the building can make great architectural abstracts, especially if you go with different perspectives and orientations. |

So far you have gotten some great advise on the some of the sites to see.
If you have time, you might consider visiting the RCMP's facilities where the musical ride does their training...then drive up St.Laurent to the Museum of Science and Technology. There are oodles of museums to visit in the Ottawa area.
Do PM me if you need any additional information.

Museum of Civilization - it's just across the river from parliament (walking distance)
Very interesting architecture. Nice curves.
See kosmikkreeper's architecture curves here...
