I want to photograph lightning. I have hooked up with a documentary group who will be shooting a couple of storm chasers here in Oklahoma. My job will be to do stills of the storms and the action surrounding them. I am ready for most things, but I want to be able to get lightning even in the day. I know at night you can just do a long exposure, but what about during day time? I have read a little bit about a lightning trigger that a company sells. The one that I found was about $400 and I couldn't find any on ebay. Anybody know a cheaper way? Or do you know a way to get a deal on one? Anybody have one that you use? do you like it? does it suck? Anybody have one that you no longer want or use?
thanks

It's usually pretty dark during a storm, even during the day. I would try stopping down as far as you can and if not slow enough, try ND filters. |

Agreed. Catching lightning is more a matter of luck. Anything you can do to increase the exposure time of pictures and not be overexposed is what you should do. ND filters is a great idea for daylight imaging.

As far as I know, the best way to photograph lightning is to set a long exposure and hope one strikes while your shutter is open. During an active storm, you almost can't miss.

i remember seeing an article about a Build-it-yourself device that would locate {distance&direction}lightning .. Mag called "Nuts&Volts" ...seems like it was just a couple big loops of wire with amplifiers attached ..
it didn't seem like it would too difficult to mod'it to trigger a camera ...
