I have just been reading an interesting thread in the News Discussion forum on dpreview.com about digital camera resolution and how much is enough for desired applications. It is RIGHT HERE. I'm sure some of you here will find it interesting too.

I would just like to see some of the photos that a 12 megapixel camera could take. That would be awesome.

Would that size (without reading the article first - so this may be backwards) be more important for enlargement quality, vs. what the human eye can distinguish? I was told that 35mm film is estimated to have about a 6MP quality. The cool thing is that perhaps the 12MP 35mm size digital SLR's will be able to do more for photography than what medium and/or large format cameras have been able to do as they will weigh less than those cameras, and have more versatility with lenses. What do you think?

One thing that is often overlooked When considering high resolutions is the ability to crop out much smaller portions of your image and use it in a wide variety of applications. High resolutions give you many more options. A 12 megapixel camera would be amazing.

So you are saying that you could take a shot of the family reunion and feasibly crop out twenty different individual portraits that are of good quality?!? Coool!

Actually, you are right, Tim. I have found that cropping with my new camera is wonderful. I try to crop while photo'ing, but not always possible.
:-)
Having good res' is very beneficial!

Hi- I'm doing it backwards too because I haven't read the article. The reason that I am wary of having many mp so soon is because the industry has not yet figured out a cost-effective, convenient way of storing and managing such large files (that I've seen-correct me if I'm wrong). Think about the size of the files that a 12mp camera would generate! I'm sure that eventually the industry will have 80 gig drives the size of a pack of gum, and that, my friends, will be a glorious day! For now, I'm sticking to a camera that has files small enough to fit on affordable media (but I certainly agree with the cropping comment Tim and Karen).
