Looks like my hunt for a 50-500 has come to a halt. I'll know for sure tomorrow. If it does, I have 2 other options, the 100-300 f4 and 70-200 f2.8, both would need a tele-converter to get the length I want (1.4x for the 100-300 and 2x for the 70-200). It wouldn't be a permanent fixture on my camera, just when I need it. My question is----does the converter have any negative effect on the photos? I'm assuming the better (EX) versions don't.

Just an insight..if I bought the 70-200, I'd also get the Tamron SP28-75 2.8
With the 100-300, I'd pair it with the Tamron SP24-135 3.5-5.6

Any 2x teleconverter will degrade your image to a noticable degree, even an EX model. It will also cut out about 2 stops worth of light, so that an f2.8 will be an effective f5.6 with a 2x converter.

The 1.4x will work MUCH better, and you lose only about 1 f stop woth of light instead of 2. The 100-300 would be the better long range choice.

100-300 f4 + 1.4x = 140-420 f5.6
100-300 f4 + 2.0x = 200-600 f8
70-200 f2.8 + 1.4x = 98-280 f4
70-200 f2.8 + 2x = 140-400 f5.6
The above being true, then I might just go with the 70-200 f2.8 with a 1.4x converter.
I'll have to find someone around here with a 300mm lens to see how that length looks. F4 should be fine for outdoors here in the South, though I'm preparing for a potential move to Denver.

Thanks mcmurma

I use this combination for 100% of my wildlife (and large bird) shots. There is, to my discerning eye, no perceptible image degradation due to this converter (Canon EF 1.4x II). It's absolutely stellar and, to me, worth the sacrifice in range.

Here's a 100% crop of a shot I took yesterday trying out my new 2x converter. Not the sharpest, by any means, but considering that I only intend to use it for air shows and perhaps some shots at the zoo, it's acceptable to me. Certainly a lot cheaper (less than £ 200) than buying a much longer lens that won't get much use.
