I got the following email today. I am really don't know how to price these photos. Got any ideas?
Dear Mr. Beams:
The Fernbank Museum of Natural History in Atlanta, Georgia, is interested in using some of your images from PBase.com in a permanent museum exhibition currently in the development stages.
We are particularly interested in the following images from your Bolivia collection:
1. Tiwanaku market seller (woman with hat)
2. Flower seller, La Paz, Bolivia (woman with hat)
Could you please provide me with information regarding the original image media and a general pricing structure for these images? We are seeking a limited-use license for this exhibition only and Fernbank is a non-profit educational organization.
On behalf of the Exhibits Department at the Fernbank Museum, I thank you for your consideration and look forward to receiving your response.
Regards,
Jennifer Sutcliffe

check it out real close, have them send a letter on their regular permanent letterhead (not computer generated). There is a lot of similar requests at many of the photo sites. Most are scams. Hopefully this is not and you can have some of your great photos on display. Also remember that "non-profit" means the leadership and workers there do get a good salary, they use free stuff from others so they can keep their own pay and benefits higher, it does not mean that they are all volunteers and expect you to be the same. Many non-profits are great places, many have very well paid staff.
Good luck.
Also find out what they will do with the photos at the end of the event. If you get them to them cheap ask them to return them so they don't end up in a private office as free decorations. |

Wow, You'll have to let me know when they go up. I'll definitely head over there to check them out. I love going there. The Fernbank Muesuem is a very well known museum here in Atlanta (and beyond) and they have wonderful exhibitions. I'd kill to get something in there. Congratulations Daniel!
Sorry I can't help with the pricing question as I have no idea. But I can tell you not to worry about the Fernbank aspect of it, they're legit. Of course, whether or not that particular person is a legit person from Fernbank, well there's always that. But that would be very easy to find out.
Again Congrats! :-)
Edit to add the link to the museum. Fernbank Museum

Fernbank is a very reputable museum and science center. I'd contact Jennifer Sutcliffe by telephone (or better, have her call you) and discuss terms live. If it's not a scam, it's a wonderful opportunity! |

While I am certainly not a one to ask, I think in your position I would do the following.
Since they are a non-profit I would think that anything that was donated to them would be tax deductible. If you can use an extra tax deduction donate the items with limited use liscence and get a donation form from them. I would also ask for a place to put your business cards as the great exposure from the exhibit could be worth way more then the price of the 2 items that you would be donating.(remember your already getting tax credit from them)
However if you cant use or get a tax deduction from them, I would use your regular pricing and offer them a percentage off to allow keeping business cards for referrals close. This could be a very profitable venture for you. Congrats on such an honor.

I would charge them as little as possible. The exposure you would receive from a project like that would be better in the long run than any money they would give you. They have stated that they are non profit, as are most museums, but they will be working in a limited budget also. I would even consider giving them what they are after.

Thanks for all of your responses. I think I will offer a non-profit barter of sorts. I work for a non-profit in Bolivia and I will offer them my images in exchange for a donation to our work here in Bolivia.
