Hi...I still use PSElements 3.0 and not full Photoshop. Someone sent me the following question. I have no idea. Any responses would be helpful. Thanks!

In past versions of Photoshop, layers seemed to work as they should, but ever since installing PS CS2 I̢۪ve been having a problem using layers. I wonder if there is a setting or checkbox that I̢۪ve missed or is incorrectly set.

When I use layers, the background comes up as normal in the layers pallet, but if I make a second layer and open something into it ... the second layer disappears and reverts to being background. I can only ever get one layer showing in the pallet. When I close the newer layer, it reverts back to the original background. This has become very frustrating as I am not a whiz at PS and am stumped. Any suggestions/help would be much appreciated. I know sometimes these PS things can be something really simple that makes a person feel stupid, but I'll take that risk ;>)

In one of the menus there's an option to hide layers. I think it's in the layers menu.

Just tried and that is not it. What "Layers->Hide Layers" does is just turn off the visibilty of the selected layer(s), like clicking the "eye" to turn it off. The layers themselves still display on the screen like normal. I searched for a setting that might cause that effect but can find none.

I'm unsure what "open something into it" means, but if they can only ever dsiplay one layer then how is it possible to "close the newer layer" and have it revert back to background? More information is needed.

There was a minor change in the way layers are linked in CS2 but no major function changes.

If you press "Shift-Ctrl-E" ("Shift-Cmnd-E"? on Mac) that flattens all the visible layers into the background layer and perhaps that is what they are doing.

sounds like their getting the image window and layers confused as you can't close a layer, only delete it..

rtfm ftw ;)

To "open something into" a layer, you use the File >> Place... command, not (as I suspect they are using) the File >> Open.. command.

File >> Open... opens a new file with a new canvas. If your canvas windows are maximized, it could look a lot like the symptoms they are describing.
