Don't give up. It's not your photo, it's the commentor. If there was a pencil in your photo, then it met the challenge and someone is just trying to stir up trouble. I checked your past scores and you have 1 I repeat 1 photo that scored anything less than 50th. There are a lot of people on here that would be estatic if they placed over 100. Unless there are 20 people saying that it didn't meet the challenge, then I wouldn't worry about it. ~Heather~ |

I've been working in advertising all my professional life (15 years). And everyday I meet someone who gives me their "opinion" of what they don't like in what we do. People tend to "look" for bad parts. I guess it makes'em feel like they know about that theme, versus just saying, "hey that nice".
Photography is no different, since everybody can see a photo, well, that means the we all know what constitues a good photo and what doesn't.
Since I joined this great site, I been so shocked to see what I consider good photographs, below 25 and some that are not (IMO-again) in the top 10. This is a very diverse crowd...
I've had the fortune of having two pics in the top three, but you wanna hear something weird, in both cases I got two or tthree people who voted them, both, 1.
1! can you understand that, I sure can't
So now I just relax and try to understand that this is what is all about. I don't worry THAT much anymore and I try to improve and do things I like, and not what I think it'll do good with the "judges"...
Hope this helps : )

I understand your rant! I have had comment that I had a nice photo, but the pencil was insignificant in the photo, so it was marked down. Like others have said, if those comments are in the monority, just "consider the source" and forget it.
I spent a great deal of time and effort for my photo for this challenge, and my first comment was in this vein and really let the air out of my tire, but a few nice comments have healed the pain. I hope you get some more worthy comments and get past it.
I wonder if these type of comments are coming from photographers, or non-photographers. Probably both, but would be nice to know if not.

I think this week was very hard for certain voter/commenters... Certain folks LOVE to say "This doesn't meet the challenge" but with such a clear cut definition, they could only say it to 1 or possibly 2 shots (one of which I gave a 10)...
Childhood should be easier for them to not see the challenge in 90% of the shots :) They'll be happy once more... |

Myqyl,
Could you see the challenge aspect of the shot you gave a 10 to? If so, well, then I guess I can't fault it and the rest of this message in this thread can be ignored. *grin* If you couldn't, and still gave it a 10 because you thought it was a great photo, may I ask why?
I think there are often some good photos entered that have, at best, a tenuous attachment to the challenge topic. While I admire the photograph, I score them poorly because the challenge is a large part of what this site is all about. Otherwise, it would be dpc: digital photography contest.
Ehh -- beating a dead horse... never mind...

I agree with Patella-it needs to MEET the challenge. If not it cannot be scored equally with the others that did meet it. That is the whole meaning of the challenge.

Absolutely :) If I hadn't seen it as an imaginative interputation of the challenge, I would have hammered it... I agree that the challenge is a LARGE part of this site and that is reflected in my score... The one I gave the 10 could only be said not to contain a pencil by the most narrow, closeminded interputation of the challenge... I know we shouldn't discuss shots during the challenge so I won't say which one I mean till Monday :) |

All the challenge stated was that there must physically be a pencil in the shot. If there is a pencil in the shot, challenge met! It also said be creative, so now you want to punish creativity? |

If there was a pencil in the shot, I judged the photo accordingly. In some cases, the pencil was just "there" -- an element of the photo that had little or nothing to do with the main gist of the photograph. I'm totally OK with that, personally. In others, the pencil was the main subject of the story in the photo. Obviously, these meet the challenge too.
There are those shots, however, which either really push the boundaries of what the challenge was calling for or which completely break them. In the first case, each voter has to make the call themselves. In the second, I don't think there should be any decision to make -- it doesn't meet the challenge. End of discussion.
So, pnicholls, I agree with you. If you have a pencil in your shot, regardless of whether or not it's the main subject, I think you met the challenge. Personally, I can assure you that I voted accordingly. Unfortunately, we ALL interpret the challenge differently to greater or lesser degrees. I can't tell you the number of times I've wanted to scream at a commenter and say, "READ THE CHALLENGE AGAIN, MORON, AND TELL ME WHERE IT SAYS I HAVE TO..." Ah the joys of public voting and letting people think for themselves....
Hmmmmmmmm... maybe I should start up a new version of this site wherein if people don't vote the way I want them to...
MWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

I have to say this is the most "On Topic" challenge I have been here for... There were only 3 shots that I ever had doubts about... After much thought and with the help of Webster's Unabridged, there is only one that is still in doubt and I'm inclined to give it some leeway (based on Webster)... If I decide in it's favor, (which I'm currently inclined to do) every single shot this week will have meet my standard for meeting the challenge. |

I think it's interesting that the current childhood challenge is the exact opposite of the pencil challenge - because the most obvious "subject" cannot be in the photo ... should be a field day for all those "doesn't meet the challenge" folks
to all those "doesn't meet the challenge" folks, I think a better way to say it is "the connection to the challenge is not clear to me" or "it doesn't clearly express the challenge in my eyes".
either way, add yourself to comment to acknowledge that your perceptions may be the weak point in the voting process

I have a great photo for the childhood challenge, but I fear the "doesn't meet challenge" because it is something from my personal childhood. Oh well, I'm going to throw it in and see how it does anyway. To date, I feel it's the best photo I've taken, so that's enough for me. I was absolutely shocked when my box of new crayons got the "doesn't meet challenge" comment. And this week...all my comments start out with "I'm guessing...." LOL. That's what I get for going off the beaten path. I'm anxiously waiting monday so I can see how badly straying from that path gets you. I think everyone did a great job this week and I can't wait to see the childhood photos. Off to bed, my half pint is still feeling sick and his medicine still making him sleepy. But he's not so bad as he's been for the last 3 days!! Slowly but surely getting better. Take care. ~Heather~ |

Well, my photo is one that involves some drawing, and I think somehow they decided the whole thing was a drawing. That's just speculation though...
Luckily, with that amount of information and the number of photos that contain drawings, I really don't think I've given mine away :) |
