I am interested in finding out what others have found sell well in stock photography. Wanna post your highest selling stock photos? Let us know your download count if you wish to share! I think others can learn from this as well. I know I will have a better understanding of what sells if I see some examples! Thanks in advance!

My sudjestion for you would be to go to a site like
Shutterstock
Fotolia or
Dreamstime

type in a search that you are interesting in taking pictures of, for example, people, music, food.. something really general like that.

Then sort the list by 'most popular' or 'most sold' This will give you the best idea of what sells. I could post my best selling images, but they wouldn't be very good ideas to pursue because they are textures. They are MY best selling images, but they are not THE best selling images on the site.... or perhaps better said, doing the searches on those sites, will give you a lot larger sample size than anyones portfolio of 100-2000 images.

Thanks Leaf, I certainly will do that. I just thought it would be interesting to see how well fellow dpc'ers are doing and get some discussion going as to what makes for good stock photos.

You can always go to a stock site and list the most downloaded images on the site. This will give you an idea of what sells.

Congrats! I imagine that American magazines and even from overseas would always be needing good flag shots. Do you get to tell what size people have downloaded and where it is used?

Mine is:

wow, that must have been awesome to get that close! Still I guess you can only ever have so many rockets taking off type shots, so you have a good market there!

has anyone ever seen their photos used or been contacted to let you know they were published? I know someone people have said in the past they have seen their photos used on different websites.

In the "most-downloaded" category, I think I have the lowest total: 13 times for this one...sheesh.

My "most-downloaded" is also a A70 shot. God I miss that little camera.
Made me my new equipment. Seriously!

It must be surprising to find your photo online and to see how the user has interpreted it.

photosbyame, that is such a gorgeous baby shot!

I have heard there is such a thing as a stock photo list? A list that gets generated with requests for certain type of images? I think I read it in a stock photo book (which was pretty old) so not sure if it still exists in these days of online stock sites.

thanks :)

different sites offer different lists ... i also think it's fotolia's website that i get an email for specific images requested

also i know shutterstock and dreamstime offers forums for people to request specific photos and subjects

If you submit to shutterstock there is a list with top 100 keywords.

How many sites do you guys belong to? Is it better to focus on one or spread yourself out? Do many allow you to belong to other sites?

i mostly submit to shutterstock, dreamstime and bigstockphoto

all same images - each site has their own acceptance rules so the same image may not get accepted on all 3 ... sometimes they do - but that way i have more chances of people seeing my image

i started with shutterstock - then dreamstime then bigstock - still working on building my portfolios ... but it's a great learning opportunity and to then get DLs and a little money helps too :)
