Can i get a DSLR for about that? $500. max shipped. I like to shoot at night and i like to shoot guitars with high reflective surface and odd things to sell on e-bay. I have my own lighting but a built in or popup flash could be cool.
I dont want a proprietary battery thats a big no no for me.
I prefer canon but if there is somthing else with a good bang for the buck im all for that. :D

I don't think any SLR is that low, but a few of the "SLR-like" cameras are in that range I think ... Canon S2 IS, Kodak 850P, and others of that ilk. |

Dude, just save up and get a Canon 1dsmkII -- seriously, you won't regret it.

I know I've said this in a ton of other threads, but I really like my Panasonic. Can't go wrong with a 435mm f/2.8-3.2 Leica lens with one of the best IS systems around. I personally have the 4mp version, but they come in 4, 5, and 6mp (FZ4, FZ5, and FZ7 respectively). You can also go up a notch into either the FZ20 or FZ30 range. Those two add a hotshoe and manual focusing, but also cost more.

You could find a Canon 300d for sale on FM sometimes that's less than that. |

As other posters have said, you can get a DSLR body for about that, but you're gonna spend lots more to get any kind of lenses for it. Also, no DSLR that I know of uses a "standard" battery, with the exception that some will accept standard cells in an adapter in an add-on battery grip (extra cost item).
If your budget is that limited, stick with SLR-like cams. If low noise for night shooting is a very high priority, then save for a DSLR, it is truly the path to great night shots. Recognize, though, that you're going down a potentially very expensive path.

I like my Panasonic too, but they sure produce a lot of noise. The new FZ7 offers ISO 800 and 1600, which should be a benefit for night shots, but judging by the review and sample shots on dpreview, high ISO shots are totally unuseable.

Yep! Battery life ain't great especially when using flash. However, I also carry two spare batteries which help a little and they are generics that so far seem to be doing the job.
For what it is worth, I really like the FZ-20 and find that as an all-in-one it is me that is the limiting factor and not the camera. But I hope to change that soon...

Depends on if you plan on using the LCD screen more than the EVF. I generally use the EVF unless there is some situation where I need to use the LCD. Using the LCD screen for only reviewing pictures taken and the EVF for everything else, I can get about 400 shots off. However, not all of them would be using the flash. Battery life isn't the greatest, but I think that the other features more than make up for it.

Well ill tell it sure looks nice. I dont have good luck using a viewfinder. It seems all my pictures come out off center or somthing when i use the viewfinder. Maybe its me? it seems i square the image up in the viewfinder then when i preview the image its off.
Im leaning twards the Canon S2IS the 0mm macro sounds kinda cool, and ofcorse 10X zoom. I wish it was black i like the look of the black better then the silver.

You can focus down pretty close with the Panasonic. I've had the lens barrel touching a surface with an object right in front of the lens and it still focuses great...not to mention it has a 12x zoom and it comes in a nice black color. :) There's no way you're going to pull off 550 shots with it though, LCD on or not. That's one great advantage of the Canon. The EVF is more or less the LCD screen in mini form. You see everything you would on the LCD, on the EVF.

The camera will come with a proprietary battery if that's what it takes, and a generic (but good) extra battery shouldn't cost any more than a set of good rechargeable NiMH AA's. My extra Nikon battery cost less than my my set of Powerex 2200mA/h AA's + charger (which are used in my Speedlight now). |

If you can wait until May, the new Canon S3 IS offers 6mp, less noise, higher ISO, 12x zoom, larger LCD, backlight compensation... and it's not silver. |

I know you can get an slr film camera pretty cheap nowadays. I never considered my film camera to be part of the dark siiiiiide, but I like that idea. Makes me want to use it more if it is radical and hinges on marching to a different drummer. Originally posted by kablargh: get a film camera... come to the dark siiiiiide |
