A few weeks ago someone mentioned possibly trying to put together an online and amateur (ok ok ok..."semi-pro" :) ) version of one of the "Day In The Life" series -- like the coffee table books that get produced every so often.
I'd be willing to put some time and technology into doing something like this, but I'd really like to see how much interest there would be in it. I think this could be a one-time thing for now, and then depending on the response perhaps we could do it more frequently?
Please also post any other ideas you have for sites that would complement (not compete with) dpchallenge. I'm very excited about putting something together but would appreciate feedback.
OK, thanks! Rob |

"A Day in the Life" is a series of coffee-table-style photography books where one day and one location is chosen and a group of professional photographers fans out to take one picture that they think represents the location. It's a similar idea to DPChallenge, but there's no challenge -- all of the photos together give really interesting insight to how differently individuals can perceive the same area.
Topics they have done so far include India, California, Japan, Africa, Israel, etc...
Since we are all spread out but have one common hobby, someone mentioned in a previous forum post that it would be interesting to see how we look at the world as individuals. *shrug* I mean, we could probably do this with a dpchallenge challenge, but I think the fun part would be to put together a series of photos that represent ourselves without competing with one another.
Just an idea....

I dig the idea of working on a project like that, but...
Well, it seems to me that what is really great about these books is that they are focused on a particular topic. Everyone who sees them agrees (for the most part) that the photographers interpretation is descriptive of a the topic.
When you have a topic like "The World", ...well, it's hard to get much broader than that. People perceive the world so differently that it may be hard to get a collection of photos that work as a collection.
I don't know if I'm making much sense, but my bottom line is this: I think a narrower topic is necessary. Something like City Life or Country Life that can be participated in regardless of country, but that has a specific focus at the same time.

You're right, of course. I'm having trouble trying to distinguish how this would be different from any old dpchallenge. The more I write about it, the more silly it seems.
Maybe a Day In the Life of the 9-5er? Or a Day In the Life of a Parent? Sports fan? American? Moviegoer? That kind of thing?
Hmmmm....

I think I'm just desperate to find something to do since it's Thursday and I still have NO ideas about this childhood challenge. |

Might be interesting to do a "special" challenge where everyone takes a "relevant" picture on September 11. Perhaps we could then put together a "One Year Later" DPChallenge website.

This seems to be the best idea yet...Some of the other ideas, though good, don't apply to all. Many don't work 9 to 5, some aren't parents, etc. Although all of the afore mentioned topics could be worked around, I suppose. One thing there is no shortage of here at DPC is good ideas...quite a creative bunch of people... :-)

Any more thoughts, grayce, on what it might be and how we might do it?

Would this be relevent to DPCers from countries other that USA? I know the US news media says that 9/11 is an international event, but is it? If so, I think this would be a great idea... I just worry that it might be similiar to asking everyone to document the 4th of July... The vast majority of Earthlings mark it as just the day after the 3rd of July... |

If it's not presented as a regular weekly dpchallenge, it can be open to anyone who wants to participate. There might be folks outside of the US who were affected by 9/11 who want to participate. Those who were not don't have to.

Same with any of the topics. Anyone who doesn't work 9-5, or isn't a parent, etc... Not ALL things have to apply to ALL people -- it might be too generic that way.
We could also do stuff like "A Day In The Life Of:"
a student a girl (or boy) a child friends a wife
etc...
A bunch of different themes would be cool, with not everyone participating in the same ones if they don't want to.

...or "A Day in the Life of a pencil"? ;-) Honestly I don't see much difference between such a series and a normal challenge. In both the point is that photographers take their different view on the same subject.
I'm not sure if I could come up with a really witty photo for a 9/11 theme but it certainly would be interesting. And don't worry, this tragedy really has repercussions affecting almost the whole world. At least all NATO countries and the countries now belonging to the so called "axis of evil".
Btw.: I visited the Here is New York exhibition. Very good!
