Persevere...who can say what score is waiting around the corner for you, (that squealing has got to be damn annoying though).

Used to be I could hit a button and it'd shut up for about 20 minutes - the alarm, that is. That doesn't seem to work anymore. I'm thinking of pouring water into the box and claiming "the roof leaked". The fact that it hasn't rained in months may betray me, however.... :-)

And the quote in your sig line relates to what I suspect I have the hardest time with:
"The camera doesn't make a bit of difference. All of them can record what you are seeing. But, you have to SEE. Ernst Haas"

Some people have better "eyes" than others. I get discouraged, but then I remember that the level of "challenge" here is significantly higher than "average" and that's reassuring.

By the way, your "Best of 2005" is still one of my favorite pics. You have a good eye. :-)

Thank you, that's quite a compliment :))

When I get dejected with a challenge score I grab my camera, walk out the door and get lost for hours. I take hundreds of photos of anything and everything that catches my eye. It reminds me of the reason I got hooked on photography in the first place, the love of it. A low score doesn't seem to worry me so much after that.

5.0 for me. I think it's time for me to quit submitting.
If I haven't figured it out by now, I'm not going to.

I'd have to say you've figured it out - you have something I'd say 90% of the people here don't have - a ribbon! You also have some great photographs - the best Light on White I recall from that challenge, and "Watching", which is simply phenominal, in my humble opinion.

Don't even joke about that - you have uber wunderbar photos, you can't stop!

I don't get as much time to do that as I'd like - at work before the sun comes up, don't get home in time to do much more than decompress, find food, get ready for the next day. But I do enjoy wandering about with the camera when I have time!

I think the initial scores on this one have me a wee bit down because I had an idea (woo!), went to the trouble of gathering the stuff for the idea, enjoyed setting it up and shooting it, even chimped a bit (and I never chimp.)

But in the end I realize the thing I like about this place most is seeing the work of others, so I'll not sweat the scores of my own work. :-)

By the way, the alarm has been silenced. Woo *and* hoo!

I went to bed last night with a 6.923. Oh well, at least I had sweet dreams!

Thanks Melethia and alfresco for the pep talk. I took a break for awhile. Had one lucky entry since coming back but everything since has dropped scorewise. I don't like watching my average drop with each submission. Okay, I'm just being a "whiner" and I like to change it to "winner".
Good luck everybody. I'll get you next challenge!
How's that?

I'd be thrilled to have mine stick around this level, as I know it's not a ribbon winner. Still, I like the shot - it just doesn't have the WOW factor that it needs. My prediction is that I'll finish around a 5.2 or 5.3. :-)

My score has hit bottom and started diggin' !

I've turned the scores off. Hopefully I can keep from peeking (at least for awhile.)

I take back my whining. For reasons totally beyond my comprehension, score has gone up since this morning. It's actually "average" now!

Is average 5 or 5.5? If it's 5.5, then my goal in DPC is to reach average!

I'm going with 5.5 as average, based on the math, but if you look at the Challenge History, you'll see it varies quite a bit by challenge. I suspect the "site" average is lower than the mathematical one.

Remind me to stay away from candids from now on. I have much better luck with my graphic style.

Not as good as I had hoped, and a let down after my 6.6 last week, but higher than my average, so I'll take it.

I just did a quick scroll of the thumbnails. WOW! There are some nice ones in there.

Excelling in my mediocrity. I pretty well entered this to have something to enter (although I did like the shot).

There was a tread on this recently. 5.5 would be the mid-point of 1-10. Someone did all of the calculations and found that the average vote cast in 2005 was somethink like a 5.29. SInce I just got my average over that, that's the number I'm going with.

I thought you were giving up photography for Lent, DrAchoo.

My square entry is right at the average mark, too. I think this type of challenge always ends up with a LOT of people scoring in the mid 5's - the only criteria is a square crop and every on who's voting has a totally different idea of what looks good in a square crop. It makes it really hard to excell.

Being average isn't so bad if you figure most contestants are competent and they're trying their best for the challenges. At least, that's what I'm telling myself.

This is very, very true. I feel this way all the time. To be "average" on DPC is to be pretty darn good as there are so many excellent photographers.

Yep, yep, yep to both. That's why aspiring to "average" here isn't a bad thing at all. Sure you have your exceptions - folks who have average scores over 6 to begin with, then stay that way, but for normal people like me, "average" is good!
