Anyone ever been so bold as to take their nice DSLR sub-surface into the ocean?
What gear did you use?
How successful were you?
Got any photos of what you caught? |

Back in the mid 90s I had a Aquatica housing for my Nikon N90s and a Ikelite housing for my N8008s (both with SB-105s), but after a case of the bends and marrying a "mountain over ocean" wife I've got out of diving until recently.
Last year I bought an Ewa-Marine U-AXP100 Underwater Housing, and for the most part it was a good investment. It has a steeper learning curve than the "hard" housings since you are operating it thru plastic, but eventually it becomes quite easy. Some settings must be made before you mount the camera in the housing. You must however, use only internal focus lenses, and it works better with lenses that don't change lengths when zooming due to water pressure. I actually trust the soft housing more than the hard housings since you can readily see if there is a leak (haven't had one yet).
Of course there are major limitations such as no off camera flash (the U-AXP100 allows for a large hotshoe mounted flash), no domed ports, and awkward buoyancy control, but for a third the price of a hard housing it is a good deal. It is also more convenient on those wet above water conditions than a traditional housing.
Since I got the housing I've only been diving with it twice in limited visability fresh water since I haven't been to the ocean lately, so no good pictures. Here's one of my daughter in the pool...
