Bear's right. It's just a re-branded Pentax. Same body, same make, same sensor, same lens mount.. everything.
Samsung and Pentax joined forces earlier this year, this is the first resulting of that. Apparently it's going to take over certain markets, while Pentax remains Pentax in the others.
At least that's the understanding in the Pentax circles. |

The two companies announced a partnership last quarter. |

I know that the differenece between 6 and 8 MPs is not that great, but why put out a camera with only 6? seems a bit outdated, as most others are coming out with more (maybe with the exception of the Nikon D50). Just for greater marketability maybe 8 would have been better? What distinguishes this camera, or any of the Pentaxes, from the rest of the pack? Anyone know what this cam will sell for? |

Where are Samsung models going to fit into all of this? Or is Pentax planning on releasing a higher end dSLR?

I can't remember off-hand what markets each "brand" will go in. Obviously the U.S. is getting Samsung, and I think Canada and Europe will be Pentax.. same cameras though. Both Samsung and Pentax are supposed to be putting out higher-end models soon.. but announcement isn't expected until Photokina in the Fall.
*edit to add* BTW, the Samsung and Pentax cameras are fully interchangeable with each other. The DS/DL/DL2/DS2 and the Samsung can use each others' accessories, flashes, lenses, etc. completely.

Only thing that distinguishes it from the rest of the pack is simply being one of the most solid little performers out there. If you're in to fancy gadgetry or gimmicks, go with another brand. It's a niche market, but has an amazingly strong and loyal following. Higher MP models are coming, but they had to stick with 6mp because that's the only sensor available to them at this time. |

Makes sense, but why not sell all the cameras under a well known name in the camera business like Pentax instead of splitting it all up?

Just read the specs and wow....
11 AF points
ISO3200
A real pentaprism viewfinder
2.5" LCD
Solid metal chassis
They put all this in an entry level camera ?
If it's priced competitively, it sounds like a great option for anyone looking to step up to a dslr ;)
cheers,
bazz. |

Business decision. Pentax is a small company these days, so you team up with a well-known player that is doing better in a certain market and get more name recognition out there. People will say, "wow, samsung has a dSLR!" and they'll buy it, and then suddenly realize they can put all kinds of Pentax lenses on it as well, and Pentax benefits, and vice versa. Pentax isn't as well known in the U.S. as it once was, and I don't think was really *ever* that strong there. Americans don't seem to respect anything other than brute force marketing ;)

Who makes their sensors and are lenses of high quality and easily obtainable? Noise characteristics at high ISO?
Wasn't Pentax more noted for their medium format cams? |

lets just embrace the change, guys.
I won't give a @#&%$ if Microsoft announces that it will venture into the dSLR market. I mean, as consumers, the more the merrier. Competition is healthy. |

You're better off just doing a general search of the net. Check out the Pentax SLR forums at DPReview, or Steve's Digicam's.
Check out the portfolios of Pentax users here. Myself, Sir_Bazz, Samtrundle, Pug_H, Lepidus..
Go find a store with an *ist DL or DS2 or the Samsung, and try them out for yourself. |

Which were honest questions, and honest answers probably helped. I agree though, competition is wonderful, and I hope the Pentax/Samsung venture works, for everyone involved. |
