I took the new lens (EF 15mm F2.8 fisheye) out for a trial run today. Specifically looked for locations / subjects that would show it at its best. Unfortunately we had NO sunshine today - terribly gray and windy - but here are a few picks from the day.
Camera store guy yesterday (when I bought the lens) told me if I hold it dead horizontal, I can get good horizons, but tilt up or down and things go fishy - I headed to the beach to try that out....
Comments / suggestions greatly appreciated.

You bet! This one is extra fun because I've never seen such a wide view through a viewfinder. Its amazing me! I was standing almost against the fence around the lighthouse and could shoot the entire lighthouse - fantastic!

I guess the wide look isn't popular? Or is it the overcast gray?
I would love to see other wide lens examples so I can master this new tool. |

It's one of the better fisheye sports shots I've seen here, and I thought of it first. lol |

Congrats on that lens! The Canon 15 fish is a wonderful lens, whether on a 1.6-crop cam or full frame. On 1.6-crop, the FoV is close to that of an 11mm rectilinear lens, and it's incredibly sharp. The fisheye effect can be minimized or accentuated by where straight lines (e.g. horizon) are placed. A very versatile little lens!
BTW, the daisy shot linked above was actually were taken with the Peleng 8mm fisheye, but a very similar shot is possible with the 15mm fish.

What I find fascinating about these and many of the other examples sited here is that they do not look "fish-eyeish". A fisheye lense is lot more versatile than I thought. Both your first and last image look like they were taken with "normal" lenses.

That's the real beauty of the 15mm fisheye; put the horizon on center, and it will come out ruler-straight. Crop a bit if needed later to move it off center, or just make the on-center horizon a conscious decision. Particularly on the APS-C cams, the 15mm fish is really not very fishy at all, but can be made to look more distorted by placing linear elements near the edges of the frame. On a 35mm sensor, it's harder to avoid the fishiness, but still possible.

All very nice images. Very delicate work. I like the subtle fish effect and the fact that the lens takes an interesting shot but is not heavy handed. Works very well for all those images.
My Nikon AF Fisheye-Nikkor 10.5mm f/2.8G IF-ED DX has hairy effect on whatever I shoot but I think I could also get some nice straight wide horizons and undistort if necessary in PS. On the list of things to try.

Congrats on the new lens, Cindi - those are some really nice shots.
I actually like shooting on cloudy days because you can get dramatic skies and have no harsh shadows. Normally, shooting in the middle of the day is a waste of time, but not when it's cloudy. :-)
Looking forward to some more shots and challenge entries with your new lens!

A few shots from today. I took a little drive down A1A from St. Augustine to Daytona. Drove on the beach for miles. What a beautiful day!! Learned right away that in portrait mode the fisheye rocks!!
Today, as you can see was much sunnier - but still with enough clouds to keep the sunlight diffused. I tried hard to get shots that made the lens work for me, not to look toooooo fishey. How'd I do?

Aweeeee thanks for the sweet comments, JP! In answer to your question, yes, I drive a jeep. Been a jeeper for ages, dad & sis are jeepers too. Its how I drive on the beach & not get stuck! Had to stop today & pull a cadillac out of the sand - what were they thinking?? lol |

LOL actually processing like mad. Between shooting Saturday, Sunday and Today I have a ton to do, popped over to click update and noticed the first few of your comments - see the rest now and huge thank you! I really enjoyed the day today, nothing is better for me than a day shooting that doesn't suck!! :D
I did laugh like hell at the Caddy stuck, it actually got stuck right in front of me, I couldn't pass them without feeling bad, so I stopped. They were from Miami - hell - they know that car can't drive on the beach!! lol
These shots have not had any PS work besides picking off the sensor boogers that you noticed. The sky was really that blue today and this fast lens captured it so well. I'm stoked! :) |
