Is that 1980's or 1880's or, for that matter, 1780's...or any '80's???

They are referring to "retro" and "this radical decade".
It's up to everyone to interpret this on their own, but to me it's pretty clear that they are talking about the 1980's. |

Because you were there to know that the 1480's weren't radical, or considered by some to be 'retro'?

I don't recall the 1980s being very radical or retro either, for that matter. Seem to recall they were actually pretty dull.

"Like, to the max! Totally show off your knowledge of the new wave 80's by going retro and, like, capturing the essence of this radical decade."
The reference to new wave and the use of valley speak ("like, to the max") are concrete examples of the 1980s. You're welcome to go 1880s or 1480s, but the challenge is CLEARLY referring to the 1980s.

I don't know if I'd say CLEARLY...but in most people's interpretations, I'll agree with you.
That being said, I agree with Melethia, the 1980's weren't very 'radical' or very 'retro' for me, personally. And I've never used words like "to the max" in any decade of any century. I guess when it's all said and done, I have no real place in this challenge anyway.
Clearly we can't all agree that it has to be the 1980's, because as I've pointed out, not all people agree...
Anyway, I was just curious ... I'm not going to enter.

I'm guessing if you entered a shot of the 1480's, it'd be pretty clear what people thought. |

I don't think they meant the 80's were retro, but that our photos should be retrospective of the 80's.
Also, as far as which 80's decade, I would say that how many people refer to the American Civil War as being fought in the 60's or Columbus sailing in the 90's? I think the general rule of thumb is that if the years are abbreviated by using only the last two digits, you are refering to the corresponding year of the past century.
I think this challenge was maybe inspired by the VH1 television show I Love The 80's, which focuses on the trends of the 1980's that look so silly in retrospect.

If you know somemone with a mullet, you can get a good 80's shot... My opinion only, but mullets must be the ugliest heairdo since the beginning of time.
If you want your own mullet to be proud of, just go to your hairdresser and ask for "Business in the front and party in the back" and there ya have it!
