I was wondering if someone might be willing to take a crack at a tutorial that I believe would be very beneficial to many photographers here at DPC. I would like to see a tutorial on choosing and purchasing lenses. For instance:

TAMRON AF ASPHERICAL XR LD IF 28-300MM MACRO LENS 1:3.5-6.3

What in the world do all of those two-letter abbreviations stand for? What does it mean to the user? A simple, straight forward guide to the possibilities would be a much appreciated resource! I'm learning a few of them (AF=autofocus?) (IS=Image stablization?) but it's mostly guess work.

Would anyone else like to see something like this?

Canon, Sigma, and Tamron explained here.

Nikon explained in the right-hand column here.

I think it would be nice if the lens/camera database here on DPC offered the opportunity for owners to post reviews of them. Maybe along with a 1-5 star rating as well...

I wonder if most cameras will focus with that lens at the long end. f/6.3 is too slow (aperture) for AF.

I agree with this suggestion. Perhaps I should have put this thread in the website suggestions forum.

I think this is actually already on "The List."

It focused fine but was softer than a baby's butt at 300... I had this one for six months and ebay'd it.

Actually //www.photozone.de (English language site) has quite a good lens performance survey already, there might also be others around - so I'd suggest referring people to existing ones rather than reinventing the wheel.

//www.fredmiranda.com has a review section too that is also very good, but covers only the better lenses.
