Can I shave my head with a Norelco electric shaver, or will it kill me somehow awkward? |

You need to cut your hair VERY close with trimmers before you shave it. I'd reccomend a classic shave over an electric shave for smoothness and razor burn.

I'd recommend using a regular razor... with shaving cream and all...

don't use the norelco for the first shave unless you want your hair RIPPED out.
goto the store and buy some electric clippers for $10, your scalp will thank you. |

I've shaved my head many times. If you are starting with real hair, there is no way you are getting anywhere with a norelco. You need clippers. Shave your head without a guard. You are unlikely to get shiny bald. Those people have natural baldness for the most part and the follicles are no longer there. With the follicles it looks like you have stubble (especially if your hair is dark) no matter how close you cut it. |

I have a clippers, then I was going to Norelco-fy it. My dad's warned me against shaving my head, so I'm going to wait for my mother's approval before I end up shaving my head. I've decided to go the razor/shaving cream route if I decide to shave my hair, because it'd give me a closer shave.
I used to buzz my hair all the time, but my dad said that was to make their lives easier, now that I deal with my own hair, I should have it long.
I also intend to grow my hair out to shoulder length eventually... |

I have about 6 years of experience shaving my head, so I speak with knowledge here...
You definately want to trim it to trimmer length before you take a razor to it, no doubt about that.
The razor is easier and quicker. Contrary to popular belief, the electric razor will give a closer shave on your head, but it takes much much longer, and I seem to get 'irritated' from electric.
Buy a large bottle of after shave. There is nothing like the refreshing feel of slapping some on your head after you shaved your head, after you get out of the shower.
Shave before the shower, not during, not after. And use bar soap on your head. This is actually the only way I seem to be able to keep pimples off my face. If I let my hair grow for a couple days, I seem to pop up a zit or two.
DrAchoo is correct, you aren't going to get shiny unless you're naturally bald up top -- I wish I could get it shiny, but I'll have to wait my turn for that. Although, it could be kind of shiny for an hour, maybe, right after you do it, but that's dependant on humidity and the temperature of the water of the shower, and also the temperature your head is exposed to directly after the shower (ie. walking outside on a cold day isn't good).
Also, bring a winter hat everywhere -- mine is like my best friend. No one could possibly understand what rain feels like on their bald head (even on a semi-warm day) until they have experienced it for themselves, so always bring protection, always protect your 'computer'.
Good luck...any questions, just ask.

EDIT to add: I say 6 years of experience, and that is shaving it, on average, 5-6 times a week...so we're talking probably 1,560 to 1,872 shaves, or about 156 razors, 30'ish pints of aftershave, 70 cans of shaving cream...all for my head. I don't even shave my face with a razor, I have to use electric on it or I get a bunch of in-grown hairs (my face and my head are opposites for some reason).

I shave my head about every two weeks. This is what I do...
1. use clippers to get the hair really short (no guard).
2. Use electric shaver to get even closer.
3. use regular disposable razor to get even closer (usually while in the shower using just warm water and no shaving cream).
Unless I miss patches (doubtful with all these steps) I get a pretty smooth shave (for at least a couple of days). Then the growing hair is really prickly and will grab just about anything it touches. |

I shave my head on a daily basis. I use a Gillet Mach 3, which gets is shiny smoothe and the blades last the 2 weeks or better. I've been doing it for the last 12 years or so. I have tried an electric razor, wasn't happy with the results and it takes longer. When I was in boot camp everybody had to shave everyday and I could do my head and face with the Mach 3 faster then most guys would do their face with an electric.

I bought a set of BALDING CLIPPERS that I use most of the time. It shaves my head closer than the normal clippers. If I want to go completely smooth, I use those clippers to get as much off as I can. To get an extremely close shave, I get in the shower and let the hot water run across my head for a few minutes. I load up with shaving cream after that and use a new (not previously used) mach 3 blade to shave. I find that I don't really need a mirror to do this. You can feel any stubble that gets left behind and shave it off. I rarely have any issues with razor burn doing it this way. A new blade eliminates burn quite effectively. As someone here mentioned, if you shave with a blade daily, u can get multiple shaves from a single blade. I don't shave with a blade daily though. I do it no more than once per week. If I did it daily, I probalby wouldn't use the mach 3 blades to do it... I would use the cheap double edged disposables.

Hahahah, yeah I got that covered tonight. I went out to buy razors, shaving cream, and a beanie. I knew what I was out to get and I got it all for like 13 bucks. I tried shaving my face with the razor, and only knicked myself once, which I daresay is pretty good for the first attempt ever.
So, what I should do is this:(?)
1. Clippers. My hair goes down to my eyes, so long attachment then no attachment
2. Electric Razor to get more cut off, but I don't necessarily have to be perfect
3. Razor in the shower or razor with shaving gel? |

Mr. Clean for 6 years now...I dig the Mach3 and I use new razors often - like every other shave or so. I have been using the Headblade //www.headblade.com/default23.htm for the past year or so. I like it, kinda gimmicky, but it works well.
Headblade also has an aftershave lube that you can get in a Glossy for that shiny look.
It works. I shine.

Deapee is right. Buy a fleece skull cap. It's soft, won't itch, and it will keep your brain warm.
SPF 40!!!! Everyday...until you get some color. Seriously, I forgot to do this the day after I shaved my noggin, went out for an all day bike ride, and my head was so severely burned that it bubbled and oozed for a week. My honeymoon week. Had trouble showering, sleeping, thinking, etc. Dumb dumb dumb.
I fight the battles in life that I think are worth fighting - hair loss is not one of them. I will lose. |

clipper your hair as short as possible. Bust out the shaving cream, and lather your head up nice, then just shave...no doubt it's still going to hurt the first time because you'll be basically ripping hairs out because they'll still be long.
If you shave daily, it doesn't hurt, and your razors last 2 weeks or so. I've never shaved my head in the shower, only before...also, try for the top going forward first...if you must go backwards, do that only after you've gone over it all once forward...I don't ever go backwards because that hurts and causes bumps.
good luck.
