this is in response to the "Splash" photo by graphicfunk, (very nice BTW). The comments pissed me off enough to write a rant on a challenge i wasn't even involved in.
First off, never vote a 1 based on originality. If that were the case, than 95% of all photographs would be voted down becasue most photos have already been done or done similarly or ideas borrowed from the originals. I do vote a lot of ones when I vote, but not for originality. If someone takes a pic of an egg, fine, a water drop OK, if it sucks technically than vote low. Also, not everyone knows that a water drop, or an egg, or flowing water is an overly photographed subject.
Second, if you can't figure out how the picture was made, don't vote on it. What shouldn't happen is a good photo getting 1's and DQ requests by people who can't figure out the methodology. Multiple exposures are possible. The method is actually very simple to understand but difficult to execute. There are some very accomplished photographers here with methods and tricks that are unkown to some beginners. If you can't come up with a reasonable quess of how it was made within challenge editing rules than don't vote. If the image is in fact illegal it will be called out by a much better eye than yours and DQ'd.
It is really a shame to see good images voted down or request DQ's by people arrogant enough to think they know everythng about photography, when in fact they could have learned a new technique to improve their own photos.
Thats all.

I've often wondered if that's what happened to this photo during voting.
If memory serves me I had a validation request for it during voting. Oh well live and learn I guess.
edit cause I spell guud.

And people wonder why the low voters don't leave comments...

I think [one of the commenters] was brave for standing up and stating his vote then people call him out. IMO that is what makes this website bad and keeps them from commenting and asking questions. This photo placed 17th that is pretty damn good. Who cares about the ones. He stated his vote and would like to see the original. Is that too much to ask?

Umm, if that were the case I wouldn't be voting on a lot of photos. It should be voted on as if it was legit. Not automatically skipped. That's been one of the 'rules' for a while... |

From the rules:
If you think an image has broken the rules in any way, request a DQ, however vote as if it's legal.
If is in fact DQ'd then no biggie. If it turns out to be done legally then it's been voted on properly.

Yeah, I just came back to say I change my mind... I looked at the comment in question, and it obviously has not taken into account the rules: 'You should then vote on the photo as if the rule was not broken'.
Yes, he owned up to this... but it is clearly against policy. I apologise for my earlier comment.

Don't vote, vote as if it were legal, fine, just don't vote it down because you don't know how it was made. The term 'you' means anyone.
[the commenter] was brave, yes. He was also ignorant for requesting DQ and voting it a 1 because he didn't appear to know how it was made. The whole point of my rant was that there is a wide spectrum of photographers here, some know some advance methods others don't. If you don't know a method, don't assume it is illegal. Try to open your mind a little and learn something.

lets try not to call people out. No problems with this discussion, but lets not call people out in this way.

I totally agree, voters have their votes and they use them the way they want. It took me a while to come to terms with that. I just choose to not take it personally anymore.....most of the time. ;)
I'm grateful that I did get some good comments on my "Triple Shot" pic after challenge, but then again I wasn't on a witch hunt either. I just wanted some good feedback and I feel I got it by politely calling people out....well it may have been a little more like aggressively politely calling people out.
It is really too bad that a majority of our small community have taken to not leaving comments rather than placing their vote (whatever it may be) and offering up their opinion on how to improve a shot. I hope that trend reverses itself in the near future, this site is a hot bed of knowledge. I can tell you I've greatly improved as a newbie photag since lurking around here.
Okay, done ranting.....;)

I try to always comment on the images I score the lowest. Ususally I vote from 3-8. All the three's get a comment from me and most of the 8's. I then go thru the others and randomly comment. I believe if you vote a image at the bottom, the least you can do is comment on why. Unless of course you give them all low scores and you just cant seem to justify yourself. |

You can vote however you like, but you don't seem to leave a lot of comments but claim to vote a lot of 1s. As a community we try to help those less skilled/knowledgable improve, and one very good way is to leave comments on photos when voting. It is recomended in the rules (in bold) to leave a comment shen voting an image 3 or less. if you think it stinks, say why you think so, be that unoriginality, technical flaws( these are are VERY easy to comment on) or even "I voted this a one cause I hate blue backgrounds" or some such.
As for not voting if you don't understand how it was made? Sorry, i disagree. You may think you know how an image was made and still be wrong. As a voter you are not supposed to judge a pic on how you think or understand it was made - vote on it's appeal to you. You like, it gets 8-10, you hate 3-5. 1 and 2 votes should be for really bad pics, very off topic pics, that sort of thing IMO.

What we need is a no vote button under the current voting numbers. There have been a few pictures that I didn't understand and didn't want to vote on.
For instance:
[
Was voted 276 out of 279. I would've not voted on this one. It's out of focus, but sort of artsy shot. As it turns out, the photographer wanted the shot to be out of focus. This should should've been higher. |
