Are these two lenses decent for getting started with a DSLR?
I've read reviews, but always good to hear from the folks here. I don't do much with macros, I do a lot of people shots, indoor shooting and basic outdoor stuff.
Thanks for any input.

5.6 is pretty slow.
What DSLR are you getting and what is your lens budget?

Since you do indoor/people and basic outdoors, you might look at the Tamron 28-75 f/2.8. It's awesome for just the things you like to shoot, similar range as the 28-80, and much faster. :) |

The tamron 28-75 SP 2.8 would be a better choice, but more expensive of course. I've read somewhere's that the Sigma is a little soft at the ends of focal length and f/ ranges, but is still decent for an entry super-tele. |

Well, I hope they are decent because I just won and auction!!! I am finally going to move up to the DSLR.
Edit to add that I figure I can always sell the lenses and buy one that will work better for me.

I started with the tamron 28-80 3.5-5.6. It is OK, but a bit low on contrast. You'll find that 28mm on a dSLR is not wide enough for a lot of uses (indoor mostly). I moved up to a sigma 18-50 2.8 EX - faster and wider. The tamron 28-75 2.8 is a very nice lens, but again, 28mm is not wide engough. At the time the 12-24's were not out, so i had little option, and to me the 12-24/11-18 class of lens is a bit specialized. Sigma has released a 17-70 2.8-4.5 that seems interesting, but I have not read any reviews on it.
Everyone raves about the sigma 70-300 APO, but the reviews here rate the tamron as very similar. Unless you have $900 or some luck to get a good price, the next step up is a 80-200 2.8 lens.
What camera are you getting?
