It is the way it is because that's the way I wanted it.
I like high contrast and strong colors. And it is as sharp as I can get it.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
End of Rant.

I'm another one who likes high contrast and strong colors. I'm getting a couple of comments about too much contrast on mine too - if it's any consolation. If yours is the one I'm thinking of, I left you a comment about the sharpness as well, but other than that, I love it.

Sorry not me. I only have 4 comments and the score is falling like a rock. *sigh*

As is mine. I got a comment about the background of mine being dirty. It's a used pencil! Pencils make things dirty when they sit around and get old! It was done on purpose...
Though maybe in retrospect, it might have been better to be completely clean... I'll have to see when I post outtakes. |

120 votes, one comment that only says 'it's out of focus,' so much for open apertures...score was never high enough to fall, it's just kinda there.

Wish I knew which was yours....I would give you a pity vote and send a nice comment too. Sorry, I know the feeling. I was next to last once.

i've got 16 comments - almost all VERY complimentary - but with every update the score drops lower and lower
which makes the paranoid in me think that either (1) the comments are fibs, meant to raise my hopes but dash my spirits, or (2) for some reason, other people are going back and lowering their votes !?!?
i think i'll curl up in a ball til monday

Mine is not dropping .... it never went very high! It has been staying around 5 +- 0.1 I get 2 comments, both positive ... this is my first entry so .. these 2 people do not know how happy they made me (even if one might have lower the score after)

5 (from me) means I think it's a reasonable photo and there is something about it which does hold some attraction for me, though not as much as higher scorers. 4 and below (from me) means that it doesn't hold attraction for me, personally. Many of the highest ranking photos have had average scores that are lower than you might think.

Thanks for the encouragements.. I am not upset with the score actually. It is my first post ... though I was more happy at 5.1 than 4.9.
And I just thought as well that there is an element in my pictures that's related to my background/life ... meaning that the 'meaning' of this element would not be there for others.
This week theme will be a little more difficult for me I think .... but .. I'll find something !

I have 1 comment from the only user that knows my entry (thanks) and a score of 4.9. I try and I try but I just can't ever seem to get a break. The only time I ever broke 6 was when I fed my dog at the table (back at the beginning of dpc).
Hmmmm, I wonder how I can depict childhood using my dog. Maybe a doll's dress would do it. Yeah, that's the ticket! Here Chester, c'mon boy, let's play a game. |

Hey Sandra;
I went through your photos to try and see if my one persons idea might help some.
I think one thing that stood out about a lot of your photos that I would change is the lighting.
It feels like maybe you use the flash a lot. I don't know if thats true but I will never use flash unless I have a lot of light and need a minor bit of fill flash. But I never use it as a source light.
The quickest way to improve lighting in a photo is to use early morning or late evening light, usually an hour or 2 after/before sunrise/sunset.
This gives you some nice color in the light and (In my opinion the most important) give you interesting angles of shadows.
When shooting indoors try to light with two sources from 45 degree angles on each side of the subject. If one source could be just a bit more dominant than the other you can get a nice shadow but not more than 2 f-stops more lighting on one side over the other.
Also, do you have a good photo editing tool?
Color correction can save a lot of photos. Having photos with color casts can hurt a lot.
I'll critique my latest photo.
"Coupon Tree" was shot outdoors at about 9a.m. and I got wonderful color in my opinion. Morning sun gave me a very nice warmth and canon has sort of a velvia slide film feel to it's colors anyways and it loves outdoor morning light.
The sun overpowered me a bit and I tried shooting in the shade with some light peeking through. Other than some reflection in the shot on some coupons I don't think light was my problem. This shot just didn't have enough "Zing". The concept was excellent (but thats my job in a way) but I needed to simplify the subject matter...get greater depth of field and open up the back of the photo for some more depth there as well.
If the light wasn't as good I think I would have scored even lower. People at this sight LOVE velvia style color..I see more blue skies and rustic reds and oversaturated stuff win here than anything. Even black and whites need to be Duotone's to sneak that extra saturation in here.
I don't know..maybe these little tidbits will help...I ain't doing so good with em :-/ |

Artist's Intent:
This is something that may or may not be easy to determine. When discussing topics such as over/under exposure or high/low contrast, The only way I can tell if it was the 'artists intent' is if these are extreme.
If I can determine that it is intentional, I then ask myself "why?"
This is the key. If you do something that is intentionally 'drastic' with a photograph, there must be a reason for it. Obviously, the artist/photographer likes the result. Does the viewer like the same result? maybe... maybe not..
I also try to determine if the exposure/contrast was done with the camera or with software. If it's obviously done in software, then it's easy to determine that it was intentional. If it was done with the camera, it's not always that easy.
Going drastic with exposure and contrast is a double edged sword in a competion like DPC. You may like the result and others may not.
You can't EXPECT everyone to share your own views, but some will for sure :)

Thanks for the advice hokie. As a matter of fact, I have discovered the importance of lighting and Photoshop correction. I'm just one of those people that gets one technique right and fall down on another on my entries. My something old entry was the "key to the past". I got the focus and lighting right (no flash at late afternoon) but cropped it too far to the left. I really thought my present entry would have done better but I guess it's kind of hard to compete with all the sketch artists (no fair). : ( Seriously, it doesn't really bother me. I'm still learning and I know it takes time to get it right. |

I wouldn't even go as far as saying advice..just one persons observations that may not even be close :-)
But...I know what you mean about getting one thing right and then another thing has to be looked at.
I sorta figured there would be a lot of sketches..it's sorta natural to go along with a pencil. Some are quite good and creative. I just remember the flak I received for having so much of my photo consist of an art element (Eye Variations and Asphalt Mirage) I wonder if people will raise the same objections about all the sketches?
I like em all, but sketches done by hand or art done by other medium (like photoshop) is all the same to me. We'll see though. |

OK, I got to go ahead amd say this......My pics this week was STRICTLY done from the "creativity is essential" point of view. I had a ball shooting it, and have gotten the best comments ever. But for those of you who are looking for the hidden meaning in the shot, your not gonna find one, cause its just not there.
Now I feel better. See you guys in the chat room later :)
