For those that feel voters do not comment enough, what percentage of voters do you realistically think should comment on images?
02/08/2006 01:42:24 PM · #2
98% of those leaving 1's, 2's and 3's ;-)

Speaking of comments I wanted to start a thread because I am going crazy over my abstract entry and no comments ... over 100 votes ... I don't think I've ever had ZERO comments at this point before. My image is averaging 5's, so I guess there is no "WOW" or no "THIS SUCKS" to express.

I agree with Meanwile, explanations are necessary with those votes.

My goal in 2006 is to comment on ten % if the challenge has over 300 entries, a higher % is possible if less than 300. We all love to get the ego boosting comments like " wonderful top 10" but I am going to try and give a positive with a something I'd like to see different, that's how we are learning. That's enough from me ;)

BTW - You give very thorough comments Stdavidson.

Thanks. That is very kind of you to say.

Thanks Hideout. And I second that stdavidson gives very thoughtful feedback. I have no comments on my astract entry either, and am just chalking it up to the nature of the challenge, which forces many to vote with their guts.

I feel it's due to too many challenges open to voting/commenting right now.

One would be enough, if it made me think differently from how I thought before reading it.

Assuming you're not voting on a pic that's taken by a camera phone or a third grader.....

Hmmmmm... I was hoping to get more ideas about how many is needed than this and hideout's ambitious 2006 comment goal.

I guess when it comes to putting a figure on it, it is easier to say you don't get enough comments than to identify how many would be reasonable. :)

Go to Challenges > Challenge History and each line contains an Average # Comments as the last figure.

One comment would be enough if it were at Critique Club level. how can I improve? that's what I'm after.

Chances are looking slim... Currently the CC queue is at 719 requests.

I understand. Personally I'm trying to give one CC level of depth comment per challenge. It takes time (so respect to CC) but is good for me - forces me to think in greater depth.

Interesting suggestion though I am not so sure that qualifies as "reasonable". :)

I don't give many scores in that area. There just are not that many images submitted that are that bad. But I reviewed my own voting record and I'm not even close to that percentage. This sounds cruel, but most images in that range are so poorly done that they are beyond the help of a critique and many are just pranksters going for the coveted brown ribbon. You can never tell which is which. :)

I did a general review of comments for low scoring images in a few challenges and felt they, surprisingly, were of much better quality than the average comment given. Maybe that could make up for less than 98% commenting on them. :)

Good luck... looks like it might be an uphill battle. It will put you in some good company. Konador comments on nearly 20% of all images he votes on. I'll stick with my paulty 6.7%, thank you! ;)

Like you, I feel the quality of the comment is most important.

E301 expressed this view too.

I think this is the best suggestion. It is not the quantity of comments you get, it is the quality! You don't have to be on the critique club to give comments at that level.

Just had to laugh, reading the bits about "quality vs quantity" comments and checked my abstract entry ... finally a comment after 120 votes ... here it is, hold your breath ... "very nice shot".

I'll take it.

Oh man, I figured my 2005 commenting average to be right around 2% (so I have been shy for 6 months), I'd better get going to make it up that 10% hill. I may have to include a few "nice shot" now and again to fulfill my goal.

That is soooooooooooo funny! LOL!

I saw your percentage of comments was somewhere around there. And, yes, there are a bunch of "way to go!" comments in my 6.7%. ;)

I try to keep my comments received below my comments made. I know that this sounds petty, but i have trouble voting on all the images.
I try and always comment on my 9s and 10s and then go to the 1s and 2s. I don't give many 1s or 2s they have to be really bad and small and out of focus and not fitting the challenge to get a 1. A bit like all my entries then?...

LOL... I'm with you on the voting on all the images concept.

Voting is very educational for me. I always vote every image and earmark the ones I think should be in the top 3.

If a vote I cast is below the DPC average for that image I look to see why. I feel DPCers are really harsh voters and know if I am below that I must have really screwed up and want to know why.

I think everyone's average vote cast should be at least as high as librodo. I'm ashamed of my low average score given but working to correct it. :)
