How about adding this disclaimer to the bottom of all pictures entered into contests as just another way of protecting members.

"This photo is copyrighted by the photographer and may not be used without permission"

I have seen it on other photography sites and could be another deterrent to phototheft.

Wow, I have not seen it before. Thanks. But If I haven't seen it then others probably haven't either. Maybe it could be placed in a more conspicuous location like right under the picture.

I suggest an ammending said statement to:

"This photo is copyrighted by the photographer and may not be used outside of the DPChallenge site without permission."

The reason is, that we often use the thumb feature to refer to a photo in discussion. In fact, simply "replying & quoting" would technically post a violation of said use without permission. This way it maintains with clarity that the image can be referenced and utilized in discussion on DPC but not outside of the site.

Not to mention the very creative use of some pics here for "hairdo" threads... :-)

What's the point ?

This is true, even without notice on the page. You own your copyrights when you take the picture - not when you stamp (c) 2006 beside your name on the picture.

You own your copyright.
People don't have permission to use it.

That's already the law in the US, where the site is hosted - notice or not.

If people don't know about the law, they don't know about the law. Most people just don't actually care, even if they do know it. Just in the same way most people pretty much know that exchanging music with their friends is mostly illegal for most music, or downloading it without paying.

In photoshop you can embed your own copyright info that goes along with the file where ever it goes, or you can watermark all your photographs in your portfolio then you dont have to worry,
