...pictures because the subject is common?
Not necessarily referring to the 7 stuffed-animal shots in the Waldo challenge. But is the proliferation of this subject making people flip past them quickly without looking at them critically, or photographically, in the Waldo challenge?
Although it's unfortunate that the idea was so popular (probably since E.T. was recently rereleased), I don't think that people should low-rank a picture just because it's got a fair amount of like company. |

Although I tend to agree with you, originality is one of the things that leads to higher scores. If 5% of the shots are of the same thing, that isn't too original. As usual, it is better not talking about specific photos or groups of photos during the voting for the challenge. |

Disagree there. This is, after all, the "Current Challenge" forum. And it's a valid point about the current challenge, not something intended to unfairly sway voting through some plea for sympathy or forced subjectivity.
And the point is, again, not that the originality of these shots shouldn't be questioned, but that, because there areso many of them, voters might be blinded to the other aspects of critiquing based on overall photographic merit, which is only partly originality. |

Actually, IMHO the current challenge would be "Rhythm" and "Yellow" and not "Where's Waldo" and "Perspective". |

I see no problem with this thread, as there is nothing in it that refers to a specific photograph. As long as the discussion is general in nature it's fine.

I'm guilty of this, admittedly. I saw the first one and thought "how clever, nice composition too." then I saw the next, and the next, and the next. Unfortunately I left a rather nasty comment in someone's box because of that, sorry to whoever that was. Still, it's sort of hard to weigh a shot fairly when you've seen it over and over and over again. |

Difficult or not, it is in the photog's best interest if each photo is judged on an individual basis. No one got together and decided to all shoot for the same subject.. Comparing them against each other is, imo, equally unfair. Just rate each photo as you see it as if it were the only photo on earth. To me .. each photo is just that during the time I am evaluating it. |

What if they had a challenge called "flowers" well gren would you downgrade the marks after youve seen your 10th flower!!!
Base your marks on each individual photo regardless of repetition, people put a lot of hard work into thier efforts and shouldnt be downgraded because someone is getting sick of seeing similar shots.

So where does that leave "Where's Waldo" and "Perspective"? There is no forum for the "Currently Being Voted On Challenge?" They certainly do not fall under "Challenge Results."

As a person with an entry with several similar entries this week, I'm fairly certain my score lost about .2 or .3 because of it. I have no delusions that it's a wonderful photo and that I'm being robbed of a ribbon or unjustly oppressed. I knew as soon as I saw the others that I would score lower. It has nothing to do with a conscious effort or conspiracy against kids or plush toys... It's human nature.
Part of the challenge is to find a unique interpretation of the challenge. In that respect, I failed miserably. But I still have a shot that I think will be wallpaper on my work computer for many years to come (I rotate a lot :)
On another note : This is the forum for this thread... Always has been.

I did not think that many of these represented the challenge very well. I can only remember one in which the person was at all well hidden! |

If you look back to the Pencil challenge, there were a lot of photos using the same idea there too, and some of those did very well. So I don't think that originality or lack thereof has a major effect on voting if the photo is well executed. |
