Do any of you know how to get a press pass to photograph pro sports, would a person have to be a member of the press, or does the team authorize people to shoot, because i know there are alot of photgraphers at the games, and i thought alot of them were independent photographers.

Work for a magazine or newspaper if you want a press pass. Then contact the particular event and see if you can get press credentials. They'll issue them to you if the magazine/ newspaper you work for is sufficiently interesting for them to want to get publicity from.
The larger the event, the more competition to get credentials (a 'pass' isn't really meaningful, each event issues credentials to those they want there)
The other thing is, the larger the event, the less actual freedom/ access you have with a credential. If you really want to shoot interesting sports - shoot high school/ local sports. You'll never get closer to the action and you wont have to fight with TV crews.
Get a portfolio together (shoot pick-up games, or small teams playing at a local park) package your portfolio professionally and approach a local newspaper (free sheets/ college papers etc) and see if they want a photographer (though they will not pay much)
After a few years of that, you can build up enough of a rep to shoot for a bigger magazine that might be able to get you credentials for pro sports.
You can also try contacting the media manager of whatever event you want to shoot and try to get credentials. I've done that successfully for quite a few events in the past.

Yup - all good advice. You may want to skip the part about working your ass-ets though. |
