Why is it that most cameras generate photos with a 4:3 aspect ratio, but common print sizes, espceially small prints (3.5x5, 4x6, 5x7), are in a different aspect ratios?
This is frustrating for moi, espcecially when I need a lot of prints fast and don't have time to go through and crop a buncha hundred shots.
Should this be in rant? I dunno...

The reason is that all the original sensors were based on video standards, with an image sized to a VHS frame and the typical monitor configuration.
A 640 x 480 image is the same size as a VHS frame. |

So, will we now begin to see a upsurge in widescreen format crops in a direct response to the widescreen laptop and plasma screens that are beginning to become so popular?
me thinks so.

Well, I tell yah, it sure would make life easier...not even Mpix has a4x3 option for small shots.

I believe DotPhoto's 4xD option would give you an uncropped, full-frame, 4 x 5.333 image from a typical 4:3 sensor. |

I find it a good thing. In fact, I wish I cropped more of my images. There's nothing magic about 3:2 or 4:3
My latest camera has a 16:9 sensor |

Snapfish does the 4 x 5.33" prints as well, in either glossy or matte IIRC. During checkout it determines how many of your ordered prints are 4:3 format and gives you the option to print them that way, same cost as a 4x6" (currently 12 cents).
