I can't remember what to do and don't have my manual...
I have a D70. Do need to format it before using for the first time? If so, how do I do that. Thanks.
By the way, I got it from the Costco deal going on 1GB for 65 bucks or something. Previously posted I know, but wanted to remind of great deal...

Same camera, same card, from same place, due to the same thread. Thanks.
As for using the card, just insert and shoot. I'm not aware of any formatting requirements. I just put in the slot and its ready to go. |

I format the card after every session, once I've downloaded all the images of course ;-)

I delete all the images once they have been downloaded. What is the benefit to formatting the card? |

I format my cards every time.
Ensures it is set up for the particular camera I'm using, ensures there isn't any OS induced weirdness/ incorrectly deleted or forgotten to be deleted files hanging around.
It's just part of my workflow - every card going in my camera gets formatted. |

You got ripped off... I got 2 GB for $95 from Calumet ($48/GB vs $65/GB).
Edit: wrong price.

It's true that the 2GB Ultra IIs are now cheaper than two 1GB cards, but ONE 1GB card is still $30 cheaper than ONE 2GB card. If you're not in the market for the larger card, why spend the money?

Format the card in-camera after offloading the pics. It's actually faster than deleting, and it does make a difference in performance. The reason this is so is called "fragmentation" and it's the same thing that slows down hard disks eventually. With CF cards, you need them perfectly unfragmented so that the files can be written as one block, otherwise you incur a stiff penalty in write speed.
Remember that the FAT file system used on the cards is a relic from the floppy disk days, and was originally intended for use on removable media of 360kB in size... yes, that's right, 0.00034GB.

I'd go for the more economical of the too any day of the week. Logically, if I can't afford the extra $30 for double the space, then I don't need the small and less economical of the two to begin with. |

Huh?
What I meant was, if I don't really NEED 2GB, then why spend $30 more for 2GB when 1GB will do. Sometimes it doesn't pay to buy at the cheapest $/GB point.

all I know is the price I paid was 50-75 bucks cheaper than in-store prices. And that was more than enough to make me happy. You can't always find the best of best of anything. especially when you factor in time and effort. Thanks for the responses.
But how do I format on a D70?
And for those who format everytime....Are you sure that doesn't hurt/disintegrate or in effect wear down the card? Probably not, because you guys (who know a lot more than me) do it...But I want to hear the answer from you guys. Thanks.
