Just curious how to score something that was obviously missed when submitted. If an image is really clear, and of interest, but there were obvious problems with dodging or burning, which caused an issue due to improper calibration, should I score it with a 1? I really like the image, and overall it is very strong, but am not sure how many points I should take off for this? Any comments on how you would vote?

I wouldn't automatically give it a one for something like that (I RARELY give ones anyway). I'd score it based on my overall response to the image, and then knock a point or two off for technical flaws, or some such. Leave a comment though. Point out what caused you to dock.

I agree with strangehost. If there are things that you DO like about a photo, then they should get some points for that. Figure out what you would give them without those flaws and dock a point or so.

I agree with strangeghost & ladyhawk, but everyone has their own way of scoring and should go with their gut. Personally, I rarely score anything below a 4 any more - but that's just me. If I find that I like the shot overall and it meets the challenge but has a few technical flaws, I would probably lower it a point or two from the score I would have given it without the flaws. There's obviously some merit there from the description you've given... Think about it the other way around, as if you'd taken the shot. You know it's a good shot overall, but realize you overlooked a minor detail. Would you want someone to score it a 1 for that oversight? :-) Just my 2 cents.

Whatever you do, PLEASE leave a comment. You assume it is an editing oversight, and likely it is, but we are here to learn form each other and telling the photog ina comment is the best way to teach.

Ask yourself this question... How should MY image be scored in this situation? Then give it a higher score.

PDCers are quick to vote incredible images low and even quicker to complain about low scores. They never seem to make a connection between the two. :)

If you really like the image and the composition, focus, etc. is still good. Take off a point or two.

When an Olympic contestant makes a mistake, they take off a point or two, they don't give an automatic 1. (In fact, there are limits to how many points they can take off.)
