On the day this challenge vote started, I found this obituary in the newspaper. This is the owner of the 'face' in my Best of 2005 photo...

CLAREMONT ââ Mr. Paul âShagâ Herman Travis, 83, of Toms Road, Claremont, passed away Friday, Jan. 13, 2006, at Catawba Valley Medical Center.
He was born Feb. 1, 1922, in Catawba County to the late William Wes Travis and Mamie Huffman Travis.

He was a World War II veteran serving in the Army, was a member of St. Peters Lutheran Church, and retired from Bassett after 15 years as a security guard.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 35 years, Edna Mae Huffman Travis; a son, Gary Travis; a daughter, Sheila Travis; a grandchild; a great-grandchild; and a number of brothers and sisters.

Survivors include eight sons and four daughters-in-law, Paul William âSonâ Travis, Donald âTootâ Travis, Earl Travis, Larry and Gail Travis, Jim and Tammy Travis and Dennis Travis of Claremont, Mike âMacâ and Cathy Travis of Lincolnton and Ronnie âRuntâ and Peggy Travis of Conover; three daughters and a son-in-law, Nora and Jimmy Haynes, Judy Travis and Kim Travis of Claremont; two sisters, Catherine âCatâ Price of Conover and Anna Lee Boston of Taylorsville; a brother, Ray âJay Birdâ Travis of Claremont; 28 grandchildren; and 37 great-grandchildren.
A Service of Remembrance will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 17, 2006, at St. Peters Lutheran Church. The Rev. Paul D. Birner and Paul D. Sundbom will officiate.

Burial will follow in the church cemetery, with military graveside rites conducted by members of American Legion Post 16.
The family will receive friends tonight, Monday, Jan. 16, 2006, at Drum Funeral Home in Conover from 6 to 8 p.m.

Pallbearers will be his grandsons, Randy Travis, David Travis, Todd Travis, Anthony Travis, Darrell Travis, Rocky Travis, Josh Haynes, Tim Lail, Joe Haynes, Shawn Haynes, Michael Travis and Nathan Haynes.
Honorary pallbearers will be the Rev. Tim Shook, Jerry Sigmon, Joe Stewart and Odell Little.

Memorials may be made to Palliative CareCenter & Hospice of Catawba Valley, 3975 Robinson Road, Newton, N.C. 28658.
Condolences may be sent to the Travis family at //www.drumfuneralhome.com.
The Travis family has entrusted funeral arrangements to Drum Funeral Home & Cremations in Conover.

This was one of my favorites in the challenge. I bet his family would think so too.

well said. Incredible picture btw, the stare, the texture of the wiskers against the creases. How could you not take his picture?

I remember when you posted this originally in a forum thread. Powerful image. Can't rememer if he rec'd a copy of the photo or not? I know if I was one of his sons I would certainly cherish this image, then again (don't take this the wrong way) the number of descendants is quite large...how could you stop at just one print?

It's very cool that you had an opportunity to get to know him some when you did, and thanks for sharing the story.

I did catch up with his son about a month later. I gave him 10 prints of this. I sent him a message through a mutual friend at the family's receiving that I would provide more if he wantes some. I haven't heard back from him yet.

There is a story behind every picture...
Yours is especially heart felt and a fine tribute to the man who has completed his travels on a road we all follow.

Btw... great photograph!
