Okay maybe I'm misunderstanding the Basic Rules here so tell me so if I am. But I was under the impression that you COULD NOT change the color of something eg. leaving one thing in color and changing the rest to black and white. Is that allowed? I've seen a few entries like this unless you can actually do that with the camera lol and I know I can't with mine.
If you can I'm kickin myself all over the place now because I had one I wanted to enter but thought I couldn't.
Thanks for the help. |

Selective desaturation if it is done uniformly to the whole image is safe in basic rules.

so using psp and putting it on highlight, then black and white is okay?
is going to kick herself again. |

okay so now after looking at that tutorial you can only do it by adjusting the hue and saturation? I still don't see how one could do that with leaving one thing perfectly blue and everthing else black and white. Now I'm going to go mess around in psp and see what I can do lol. |

You can't do it if you have a lot of other things in your picture besides your subject that are also blue. There are other tools besides Hue/Saturation that can also be used. I don't know the tools in PSP so it would be hard to comment.

well in psp you can use paintbrush, then set it on highlight, then color legacy. and you can "paint" everything black and white except for what you want colored. |

okay I see how it's done. Wouldn't have been able to do it the legal way with mine.
So basically as long as nothing else in the pictures was blue but one thing, then you could make everything black and white with just adjusting the hue and saturation right? |

I don't think that the method you discribe would be legal under basic, because you're modifying individual pixels with a brush.
Legal methods of doing color shift/desaturation in basic are mainly the hue/saturation sliders.
This shot is an example of doing it legally under basic. I took out all the greens and yellows by sliding their saturation controls down to zero. The photo was taken on an overcast day, hence the white sky. If it had been a sunny day you would see the blue sky too, and there would be no legal way to remove it (that I'm aware of) without also taking the blue out of the flags.
Someone once said that if you are "using a brush tool" in basic, then you're probably doing something illegal.
Hope this helps. |

I'm pretty sure that would be illegal

Not sure about PSP but in Photoshop it is very very simple. Simply add a hue/saturation adjustment layer and de-sat the red and yellow channels.
This does not require any selection to be made and so is perfectly legal in basic edit

okay, thanks guys. I understand now lol. I was just curious because I've seen quite a few that were like that but was curious as to how it was done without using paintbrush. Now I know! Learn something new every day here:o)
Oh and I wasn't trying to accuse anyone of doing something illegal, I just wanted to know if I had misunderstood the rules and if there was another way to do it. And it was that indeed lol. |
