Has anyone noticed if certain ratios do better than others in challenges? - For example, do traditional crop ratios generally score better than more unusual ones like square or panoramic? |

landscape orientation fits on more screens, without scrolling - so have better chance at good inital impact.
Square formats can be too large to compress effectively to under 150k

Thanks for confirming my suspicions. I can't remember seeing any panoramics, square, or tall/narrow ratios ribboning recently.
I suppose traditional rules of composition best fit in traditional ratios. |

I suppose traditional rules of composition best fit in traditional ratios. | Right now the first image on the homepage is a square, jjbeguin's Eye Contact that took blue in the Singled-Out challenge. Of the 9 images currently displayed on the homepage only 3 measure in at any of the standard ratios used by DPCPrints.

Ah, you're right...

But they're fairly close... there are none that are really long and narrow or tall and thin.

I wouldn't worry about it -- use whatever works for your photo.

Most people seem to have an unreasonable faith in the ratio that their particular camera produces, as if it has any meaning. This leads to an unwillingness to crop to anything other than what the camera spits out. |

Photos that are fairly small or really small would have a disadvantage IMO, especially since more and more people are using higher resolution monitors these days. And for the same reason I think square images that measured 640x640 might have a slight advantage since they can fill up the screen with more detail. I have my resolution set to 1600x1200 so keep the larger photos coming! :) |
