All this thread has done, is to show me that I need to upgrade my editing software to help my transition from snap shot to a more professional looking pic :-(

Thats ok, baby steps...

I sized them to be the same, but Photobucket, my picture hosting site, made the second much smaller. I am still pretty new to Photoshop Elements and was just trying to see what I could do- fiddling with the knobs as it were. Besides level and color adjustments it includes a solarization and an inversion (making it negative). Looks like one of those false color scientific pictures.

My favorive beach shot.

My photo editing software isn't fancy. I just use Microsoft Digital Editing Pro 10, very inexpensive. I don't even have one adobe program.

Up until this week, I've been using Photoshop Elements with a lot of help from Scott Kelby's book and tips from all of you. Expensive is not a requirement.;-)

I completely disagree. The After shot of your mother to be is fantastic and the faded/blended background conveys a dream, just like motherhood should be. The crumpled background of the original has negative connotations and draws away from her, which should be the focal point. Good job.

Well, the one is "art" and the other is "professional"... It's a matter of taste. I never said the vignetting wasn't well done (it is), and I did say I'm sure the customer liked it...

Interesting comments :) I'm very surprised that anyone would like that crumpled sheet background, but I'm glad you did. To have the first called "art" and the edited version called "professional" I'll take any day! :) It is very interesting how you can start with one photo and end up with such a variety of "looks."

The magic was all in the B&W conversion, really.

As you can see, no cropping at all but a couple of hours slaving over a hot Paint Shop Pro 7.02. It was a Basic Editing challenge of course too.

Even I'm surprised at how pathetic the original looks now but when we rounded the corner and saw the scene, we were seeing it as it is finally presented in the After image. The camera just didn't capture the drama we were seeing - I guess because of the haze. I guess I really need a circular polarising filter for days like that.

I just starting taking Adobe Photoshop CS2 I and II courses back to back for a total of 30 hours of instruction. After my first day, I couldn't wait to start reviewing 3000 images. Many of these I thought were unusable, but thought I should keep anyway. I'm glad I did.

Here's another pair. This is the image that I ended up realizing that I just kept on adjusting as usual to the point that I forgot that dodging/burning is not allowed in basic editing. I didn't forget that cloning is not allowed, otherwise I would have eliminated the powerlines on the right side.

I still need to work on the shadows, but after being a member of DPC for 2 weeks, I've made a lot of progress...
