I barely touch my mouse now, since getting a Graphire 3 ... for me it's more than sufficient. I guess a good artist would benefit from the extra pen nibs and so on on the Intuos series, but that doesn't matter to me.
For Australians, you can do price comparisons for computer gear on //www.staticice.com.au (prices show up in ascending order). The search query graphire -mouse -stand -nib -pen -frame will show just the tablet packs (tablet+pen) so you don't have to wade through the prices for accessories like spare nibs, pen holders and so on.
Combine it with Firefox tabbed browsing, and set up the "middle" mouse button to open a link in a new background tab... ahhhh, browsing bliss. :)
Edit: removed "wacom" from the sample search, not really needed.

I just purchased the intuos2 4X5.. and will give you a review when it gets here. I debated a lot between the 4X5 and the 6X8.. but in the end I decided that I think the 4x5 will actually be quite large enough.
I took a pen on a piece of paper, and while watching the screen pretended to move the mouse (while moving the pen) around on the paper. When i had 'moved' the mouse to the four courners back and forth and accross and diaganol, I looked down to see what i had drawn on the paper.. and it was a box about half the size of a 4x5 square.. which means I like a fast mouse.. and 4x5 will be more than enough room to move around the screen (for me). I also tested it by moving my mouse to the top left of the scrren, putt a park on a paper corresponding to the mouse, then moved the mouse to the top right of the screen, and put a mark on a paper where they physical mouse in my hand was.. and did that for all the corners... once again it was smaller than 4X8.
I hate it when i try use a mouse at a different place, or if my mouse settings get reset, and the mouse only moves half as fast as i think it should. I think it is a lot to do with preferance as to what size you need.

I'm left-handed and have no trouble with it. I got mine from Amazon, they have it for $84.99 with free super-saver shipping.

Before I had a Wacom, I had different brand tablet. It was cheap, and it was nasty.
There are probably better brands than my cheap and nasty one, but AFAIK none of them stack up against Wacom.
Edit: The one you posted looks better than my cheap one. But it's difficult to tell how good/bad it is from the box. I don't know the brand, so I'd be a little sceptical.

The Intuos tablets are an excellent product, and certainly excellent for editing and for art. Is there any reason you're spending the extra money on the Intuos over the Graphire?
If you do decide to go with the Intuos, Amazon has it for $399.99 with free super-saver shipping

I've recently purchased two 19' LCD's and now I wish I could have the intuos 6x11 to work with both monitors. My graphire works great with photshop CS, I even used it as a mouse before I got dual monitors. What I like the most are the pressure sensitive feature, works just like a real pen and the fact that it is wireless with no batteries. I couldn't go back to "mouse" editing.
Once you go Wac you can't go back. |
I too am looking to pick up a wacom soon and also use dual monitors. Is it more difficult to use the smaller size tablet with dual monitors? Any recommendations on size for dual monitor set-up? |

I'll grant that my experience is limited, but I have yet to see a tablet that can hold a candle to the Wacom tablets.

I had a look, and compared it to the prices here in Australia. To me, it looks like a good price, not a too-good-to-be-true price. Enjoy your new purchase! |

AMAZING.. back in 1982 I had an Atari 800 and worked it with a graphics tablet very well. I also had a boom mic and was able to do voice recognition for word processing. Amazing that it all went away and has taken over 20 years for the same products to be made available for PC's ... new inventions are sometimes just fads brought back.

I posted this earlier but, does anyone have any thoughts about using a wacom with a dual monitor set-up? Need a bigger one since so much screen real estate, one type better than the other, etc.?
Thanks!

Urm, that's all been available for the PC since then too. I was using voice recognition on a PC in the early 90's, same with using a graphics tablet.

I'm still trying to get used to the Intuos 6x11 on a dual monitor set up.
Right now I have the pen mapped to just one panel, but the mouse mapped to both. Not convinced that's the best approach yet but still fiddling.
I've become addicted to using the shoulder buttons on the mouse though - wanting them on my work machine to go forward/back on web pages. |

A friend of mine in Germany purchased the same as mine, Intuos2 6x8 Platinum. He has dual monitor setup and he has no problems. I've had mine longer, but I think he took pleasure in setting his up better. We both agree though... cannot live without it. :) |

As for my dual-monitor setup I use the tablet on one monitor only. Since my tablet is 6x8 and the dual setup gives me about a 6:11 ratio it's hard to get used to. You now have to cover 2 monitors wide with the same work area on the tablet. That makes for weird results. Try drawing a circle.
Both my monitors are LCD 19 inchers, pretty much all I see on my desk, but only takes about half the space of my single 19' CRT.
Wouldn't go back. |

I've been trying to understand this for a couple of days... Please don't think I'm being critical, 'cause I'm not. I just don't quite understand the point of these tablets. What exactly do they do? :) |

I really enjoy using my Tablet PC with 256 levels of pressure sensitivity. I don't feel that it is not sensitive enough. Just having the ability to do stuff right on screen is fantastic.
My primary uses are PS and Chinese handwriting practice.
I use the Acer C302 and it is a capable machinese (ok, maybe not for games), able to handle most stuff without a hiccup in PS 7
When I go to other people's houses/offices and use their computers, I keep looking for their stylus...
If I could do it again, I would consider getting a new Dual Core Desktop replacement type notebook and an external digitizer though. Insanity. For cheap! |

Try using one, for example to mask around an object (mildly complex) in photoshop, then try to achieve the same amount of accuracy using a mouse in the same space of time.. Then you would see the point. Lots of other advantages as well.
