I've been watching all the critique sections in the forums and enjoy the diversity of opinion, even though some of the photographs are actual photos from galleries and not all shots done by members of dpchallenge or JMSetzler.

I think it would be very interesting to set up 1 to 3 "dummy accounts" within dpchallenge and submit imposter photos as contest submissions. Collect member votes, statistics, and comments as if they were posted by members. At the end of the challenge, "unmask the imposer." It could even be set up for member to submit a guess as to which submissions are imposers and give kudos to those who recognize them.

I have an AA in programming, so I'm not the expert in what programming is involved, but I can't think it would be too difficult for the programmers here at dpchallenge. "Unmasking the imposer" would add another fun dimension to dpchallenge and be a great learning tool for us novices.

It might also serve another purpose and cause members to change the way they view photographs as they vote. I know if I thought there were award winning shots included in the challenge I would be looking more closely at each photo for its merits.

Thanks,
Shar

This idea has been talked about before. I have supported this idea and a few others have as well.

It would definitley add some interest to the weeks photo judging and maybe even spark conversations in a more positive light.

I guess we can see from John Setzler's critiques in the forum that it is sometimes hard to tell when one is a professional photograph and when it is not. This could be an interesting and fun twist to things. I would love to see how many "this picture sucks" on award winners.

My point exactly. I think sometimes the critique is made with the thought "this could have been done by jmsetzler" or, "this could be a famous photo taken from a gallery somewhere." This kind of thinking obstructs accurate critique.
I would be very interested in the members critique as if it were a member submission. Heck, I'd probably be fooled right along with a bunch of other members. All part of the fun and interest of this possible site addition.
Thanks for the input to my thoughts.

I think this is a very exciting idea and I would love to see it happen. The most significant hurdle I see is that of copyright. As most gallery works are protected by copyright, Langdon and Drew could not knowingly post material in violation of that copyright.

I'm not familiar enough with copyright law to know whether an educational/fair use assertion would hold in a for-profit environment, nor am I an attorney.

How would copyright restrictions be veiwed differently from posting them to the forums for critique or to the contest for essentially the same purpose.

I think because we give no prizes and set the whole "competition" up with an educational purpose I don't see real problems.

Plus, Drew and Langdon don't even take advertising. It's sorta like having a fan Star Wars site or other fan site.

Although I am not a lawyer..I only play one here in the forums :-)

Afriend of mine use to have a website that used portions of current writers books for educational purposes, entire chapters. The site lawyers there had no problem with it and I expect posting a photo each week would fall into a similar category.

Bad choice I think. LucasFilms are pretty bad for squashing the little
guys :)

I wonder what would happen when the 'fake account' won...

This is a interesting idea and think it would be fun, however, what happens to the really good photos that actual challengers submit and people THINK it's the "imposter". I can see it now, I really excelent photo getting shot down because people are saying "nice fake". or "nice try", meaning they "just know" its the fake and wont even waste their time with it. Personally I think it would be fun, but would be kind of scared to post a "professional" quality photo.
There's my 2 cents.

The Digital Millenium Copyright act protects a web host from liability for copyright infringements by its users.

For the purposes of the forums, Drew, Langdon, and DPChallenge are web hosts. If I post material in violation of copyright, they cannot be held liable for infringement so long as the remove the material within a reasonable amount of time after the copyright owner notifies them of the infringement. And liability would be strictly mine for posting the material.

If, on they other hand, they post the material, then they are acting as content provider and are responsible for the legality of that material. Any liability for infringement would be theirs to shoulder.

Again, I'm not a lawyer, I'm just relaying my understanding.
