I'm curious for other's opinions on why this is my top rated photo. I'm not going to make any qualifying statements or defend any statement made. I want honest opinions not affected by my input.

Clean, simple, nice color contrast, well composed with an interesting angle, well-lit and exposed...easy on the eyes. It's got a lot that works, at least here with DPC voters. ;^)
edit for typo.

Hi fotomann,
Just judging the photo and not the contest it was in... the picture is sharp, good DOF and has a very good contrast in colors. Composition is interesting, mainly through the use of the rule of thirds. The lines in the picture take the viewers' eye from bottom left to upper right, which is natural, and the crossing lines behind the tools take the eye back from top left to bottom right. Out of the box idea as well, original. That's my $.02, hope it helps.
edit: typo

The thing that bugs me most is the fact that the tools aren't clean ( or they aren't new).
Devils in the details.
Everything else I like.

I have to agree with Brent.
I think it's not my kind of photo (hey, don't blame me, I'm a girl!)
IMO the background is a little busy and I think the steel doesn't look like glimmy-bling-bling-steel, but maybe that's just what you wanted to achieve.
why it's your top-photo? don't know.. maybe there were a lot of guys voting that challenge? ;)
hm. didn't mean to be too honest :S sorry

I think that was the difference between top 25 and top 10 or even 5. It's a set up shot and YOU have total control...
I think it also helps that there was no cheese... :-P |

I like it a lot. Obviously, like everyone else is saying, the technicals are good, but I think it's the composition that makes it, and the contrast of the silver against red helps too. Unlike Brent, I like the hint of dirt/scratches that indicates that they have seen some use. Composition-wise, it's kind of like a flower shot, if you can imagine the wrenches replaced with [insert favourite flower here]. Flower shot for guys maybe?

All the comments have been interesting and helpful, but this one is very intriguing.

Click foromann's name to see his portfolio page. Look at the "highest rated photos" in thumbnail form on that page. Which one pops out at ya? Yup, this one... It's like an anomaly in his work, the only crisp, clean, pure image in his top finishes. The "grinding nude" has some pop to it, but it finished lower due to "shoehorning sex into an industrial challenge" voters. Other than that, what we got? Cigarette butts, two examples of that...
So it's one of his few entries that "fits" the DPC idiom, and it's his highest-rated entry. No surprise.
Nice shot, too :-)

I think this is a great shot....the one thing I think I would have altered to make it even better is cropping off the top of the picture so it is nothing but the tool box. I like it did so well because the lines of the toolbox are angled, had they have been perfectly straight it might have hurt you. I also really like how the wrench heads are straight but the handles come in from the angle. I might have to agree with the other commenters that the wrench's should have been brand new (no scratches), or really beat up. They are kind of shiny new/old...if that makes any since?!?!??! I think the contrast of colors is great the silver really pops against the red background...but at the same time the silver lining on the toolbox draws ties it back together. Lets see...oh yes the lighting is another plus to this photo...the toolbox is slightly dark around the edges pulling your eyes back to the middle which is what I am guessing you were trying to do.
Anyways there's my $1,000,000...hehehe...hope you enjoyed my comment |

Hey Bear, can you define the "DPC idiom"? I only ask because you have entertained my mind.

This wrench image is no doubt crisp and colorful and very pleasing to see, however, I prefer your industrial shot. You must bear in mind that images are ranked according to the challenge they are in and so it becomes difficult to compare them with those outside of one challenge.
Yet, the fanciful presentation of the wrench image makes it quite unique. It is indeed a small feast for the eyes so its virtues are inherent in it. |

In general, crisp, clean, sharp images with bright, primary colors work well in DPC. This is not to say other images can't work as well, but this is a good formula for general acceptance.

And simplicity is a very big plus. Especially for studio/set up shots as this one. Very simple lines. Very simple composition. There is nothing there that does not need to be there... |

Heya ... have put some thought around this ... perhaps its because is was truely accepted as on theme as well as a really good picture.
I like lots of stuff from your portfolio .. but some of the entries are like you ... a little out of the box ... now isn't that subtle of me :)
