Just be careful of the scum that will try to scam you on the internet...
I agree with most that this site is a great place. I have a lot of friends here that are real life friends as well.
I also met my wife on-line, through an internet dating site. |

You can be my friend, too!
Mostly, these are people I've come to know a little bit through get togethers. GTG's are more addicting than this site for me! Since my first GTG in July I went on to organize one for "local" people. It's not easy getting everyone to agree to date and place and be free from other obligations (Oh, damn! I forgot Neufer!), but face-to-face just helps me stay real. (I'd also mention that I'm a lot more sensible in my comments on anonymous challenge entries now--you never know when it'll turn out to be one of your buddies pics....)
And Alienyst! Damn. I know I shoulda stuck with the "all my DPC friends" phrase and left it at that!

Me TOO! Almost 6 years now. ;^) |
Met my husband online...married with 2 children now...and can honestly say..I would never have met my soulmate if I only made friends in "real life" and kept online people only as aquaintances.
I am all for a bit of positive typing on the forums too! |

I meant in "rant" muckpond, not at DPC. You took my quote out of context. Something not so rare these days.
In any case, those that make what they consider friends in forums, more power to you. I personally don't take that leap. I have been burned too many times. However, my daughters have met some lovely people online. My oldest is still best friends with one of them from years ago. However, if you take the leap to meet others outside of the computer, I think you will have a better shot at friendship then trying to understand some within the computer realm. But my youngest daughter has not been so lucky. Met some real whackos. SO you have to be very careful when doing such a thing.
However, if you show love 24/7 online, you will most likely get it back in return. :)

And the pity is that despite all signs to the contrary, those who are the problem are unable to recognize it, or unwilling to... There's a level of self-delusion operating here that is forcing SC to take a more active role in what ought to be a self-policing community.
IMO anyway.

Even the "good" people have been getting push to their limits - I even saw Bear_Music get mad the other day.
all I have to say is... don't poke the bear! :D
Edit:
I had to spend an hour after his post just looking up words... but then I guess that's the way it is with most of his posts...
(just playin' with ya bear, not poking ;) )

No offense teri, but this is a post for the fantasy challenge. :)
I have had about 20+ different forums in my day. I have made many friends. Some have stabbed be in the back with a buck knife, some have remained to this day, but even after years, the friendship is more of an acquaintance. We really have acquaintances online, and not "friends". I would save true friendship for real life.
Sure we all love photography. I would hope there aren't many here who don't. LOL..But as with many artists, many are tempermental, emotional, and just as with any subject, this is brought out even more. However, if a forum be about gardening or politics, there will always be heated debate, arguments, name calling, and yes, in some cases, acquaintances do shine through and are made. To think it will always be about smiles and happiness, this will never be. I have never seen it yet. It is actually great when it happens though. But there will never be good without bad, and that is in all walks of life.
Geez, I hope I don't sound like an analyst? LOL....Well, this has been my own general experience anyway. People are different. This is what makes us each special and unique in our own way. We can't see each other, or feel each other's body movements, or even hear each other. We can only summarize based on words, and it doesn't always come across as pretty. There will always be differing of opinions. If that never happened, there would be no discussion or discussion forums.
Now, I do believe there are threads that discuss the more technical aspect of photography, in which I would think little room for disarray could be found? But you are in the rant forum discussing comradarie. And it is mostly likely here where you will rarely find it.

yes i see your point.. i know making real friends in such a vast community is fantasy but you just never know ;) anyway its ok i was just venting a bit

teri, if you ever want to converse outside of DPC, you can certainly use my email or my IM's any time you like. I am more then willing to discuss anything with anyone. Whether its a recipe, to venting, to potting a plant. It doesn't matter to me. :)
My information is in my portfolio. Use it whenever you like.

I'm sorry. I don't know what a GTG is? LOL....
I just wish I was in a big city sometimes to take some nice night shots!! I'm going on a shoot this weekend. Not sure where yet, but that it what makes it fun. We choose a few places we would like to go, and then make a picnic out of it and just go. Usually we decide on the way.
The butterfly house is opening here soon. I can't wait for that. Many places around me in Florida I have yet to see, so I am hoping as I venture further and further to find new and exciting interests to shoot. My head is always spinning while looking for a photo op. Do you find yourself doing the same thing?
