I'm dying for a DSLR but I don't have much money. I really want a 20D but can't afford it right now. I'm leaning toward the Rebel but don't want to get short changed. Is the 10d comparable to or better than the Rebel? Thanks. |

If you watch the different sites for a used 20D you can get one at an affordable cost. Such as the one I just picked up off the Fredmiranda site - got the 20D body for $870. It was used, but had only about 5k clicks on it. If the 20D is really what you want i would hold off and try to grab up a used one - the 5D is out now and folks are starting to buy those and sell their 20D's. Plus, another new Canon is expected out soon - one that replaces the 20D, which means even more used ones will become available.

This is the only photo site that I frequent. What are some other sites that I can keep an eye on for a used 20d? And thanks for the tip. |

you can also watch ebay - but make sure the seller is reputable. You'll have better luck watching the other photo sites

I wouldn't even consider the 10D, even though those who own it like it, it's a very old camera, it doesn't suport EF-S lenses, it's low on the mpixels, and it gets really grainy above ISO800.
the rebel XT is a much better choice, but if you can get a used 20D then that would be your best buy :)

I too think you'd be well served with a used 20D, and I second the suggestion of the FM buy/sell board. You can also do well on ebay, but do be very careful, make sure you are aware of the seller's reputation. Second choice would be the XT, it's a good cam. While the 10D is also a very good performer (I have owned one for 2.5 years) the lack of support for EF-S lenses is a significant disadvantage, mostly for wide angle.

If money is really that much of an issue for you and you are not beholden to Canon, then consider the Olympus E-500 with two lens kit which you can pick up for $775 NEW! The two lenses take you from a focal length of 28mm to 300mm. It's also better built and has more features than the Rebel (such as a 2.5 inch LCD screen. |

I faced that exact same decision last March...I went with a brand new 10D (which I got for an excellent price) and haven't regretted it for one second...not even a millisecond. I THOUGHT had my heart set on the XT, but once I held it and then held the 10D, I knew that the 10D was the only choice for me.
As an aside, I hate it when someone says "Help me choose between X and Y" and every post to reply is "You need to choose C or D." Especially when it's already been established that C or D are not options because of money. :rolls eyes: |

I own two 10Ds, which serve my purpose very well. I actually prefer the 10D to the 20D, mainly because of how these sit and feel in my hand. Neither model has a spot meter, which, to me, would be the only reason to look at an upgrade. Considering the current prices for a used 10D as compared for a 20D, my choice (if I were you) would be a very easy one.

I had to make this choice recently myself but between that and a 20D. I went for a 10D, largely due to price. I couldn't justify the extra expense - I've played around on a 20D and it's faster and stuffens but I love mine. If you can afford the 20D go for it but otherwise, if money is an issue I'd say go for the 10D.
Also, what are you wanting to photograph? I mean the 20D is much better for wildlife or sports, as it does 5 frames per second over the 10D's 3. |
